Les Herbiers – a Vendéen market town
The town of Les Herbiers lies in the west of France, in inland Vendée, a department better known for its coastal resorts than its tranquil and rural interior. Les Herbiers, with its weekly markets and mediaeval past, is a charming town which offers an invigorating blend of ancient and modern, richly bewitching and satisfying in turns. The countryside in which it is set is gently beautiful, with rolling hills, deep woodlands and fields which glow golden with gorgeous sunflowers in early summer.

About town
The town offers plenty to see and do, and it is certainly worth taking time to discover the historical features as well as to enjoy the more modern pleasures of shopping and dining which can be found in abundance here. Visit the partially restored Benedictine Abbey, still an active monastery, where the monks host atmospheric concerts and cultural events which are open to the public.

Mount Alouettes
Climb Mount Alouettes above the town, where not only will you find great views, but also the three remaining windmills from the 16th century (there used to be seven). Here too you will discover the lovely chapel built for the Duchess of Berry in the 19th century.

Shops, markets and restaurants
This being France, you will undoubtedly be hoping to find excellent shopping, superb dining and traditional street markets... and Les Herbiers will not disappoint on any of these counts. Markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year, and the pleasure of strolling around the town taking in the vibrant atmosphere whilst treating yourself to the freshest of produce and local specialities is a joy that is hard to beat. All the necessary amenities are here too, including schools, banks, supermarkets and health care.

Out and about
The Vendée can honestly fulfil its promise to its residents and its visitors that they will never be bored, for there is so much to see and do in the region. Puy de Fou is nearby, and the light shows and exhibitions staged in the summer months here are legendary and not to be missed. The fabulous Vendée coast is accessible for day trips, and the coastal towns such as St Jean de Monts really buzz with life in summer.

Sports fans will also find much to occupy them, as Les Herbiers is dedicated to providing excellent sporting facilities and encouraging all ages to take part. There are swimming pools, sports centres and tennis courts within easy reach, as well as walking trails and facilities for that perhaps slightly less energetic French game of petanque.

Stunning countryside
Simply exploring the delightful countryside is another option, and one which will never pall no matter how many times you have visited. Les Herbiers lies in an area known as the Haut Bocage, which is the highest ground in the Vendée. It undulates gently and scenically with hills, woods and meadows, perfect for walking, cycling and horse-riding.

How to get there
Les Herbiers is within easy reach of several airports which offer direct flights to and from the UK. Fly to La Rochelle, with flights with budget airlines Ryanair, flybe and easyJet, or fly to Angers with Eastern Airways or Poitiers with Ryanair. Nantes is also within reach, and has flights with Ryanair and Aer Arann. Poitiers is a town which has a TGV stop too, so it is handy if you wish to travel by these excellent fast trains. Drivers also have an easy time getting there, as you can find Les Herbiers in under ten minutes from the A87 motorway.

Property prices and availability in and around Les Herbiers
Les Herbiers could be said to represent better value than the Vendéen coast, as you will find you can get a lot more property for your Euros here than at the seaside. There is plenty of property on the market at under 300,000 Euros, and at the higher end of the market it is possible to find a real dream home for less money than you might expect.
