The little village of Aunac, set amid the sunflowers, pastures and woodlands of south-western France in the department of Charente, is a delightfully sleepy, tranquil haven, traditional in aspect and yet ideally located for exploring this wonderful part of the country. Enhanced by the lovely River Charente flowing gently beside the village, Aunac is a rural treat and a lovely example of a typically Charantaise village.
If you are looking for a social whirl, hot night spots and a parade of designer fashion shops, don't settle in Aunac, because this is not what village life here is all about. If, on the other hand, you take pleasure in unspoilt countryside, the soft sounds of a gently flowing river, the golden hue of sunflowers, the warmth and friendliness of local people and a laid back lifestyle, then Aunac could be just the ticket.
The village has some local shops, catering for the everyday needs, and also a pharmacy, a doctors and the essential bar/restaurant for relaxation and pleasure. Should you want to have a major shopping expedition, or a greater choice of more sophisticated restaurants, these experiences are easily supplied by several nearby towns. The lovely market town of Mansle is a near neighbour, and offers a good selection of shops and services. Mansle also hosts a dance festival each year, which is a very popular event.
One of the great things about being based in the Charente department is that there are so many possibilities for exploring the area and choosing from a whole host of local attractions. The Atlantic coast is well within reach for day trips, as is the Gironde Estuary. Travelling south, you can explore the wine town and the famous vineyards of Bordeaux, or the stunning scenery of the Dordogne. To the north of the Charente you can find the city of Poitiers, historic and fascinating, and also home to the fabulous educational theme park Futuroscope. Finally, heading east you can lose yourself in the lush green lake lands of the Limousin.
The nearest airport is Angoulême but currently this does not offer flights direct to/from the UK. You can fly direct from the UK to Poitiers, Limoges and La Rochelle. Poitiers is served by Ryanair, while La Rochelle is served by Flybe, Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2, and Limoges by Ryanair and Flybe. The train also can get you to these destinations, should you prefer this method of transport, or if you want to avoid delays due to recent phenomena such as clouds of volcanic ash! If you prefer to take a car, the nearest ferry ports are about a six-hour drive from the village. You can access Aunac from the N10 auto route, along the D27/D187.
Poitou-Charentes is a region which can offer some lovely properties for not a lot of money, although it must be said that the Charente is one of the more expensive of its departments. Aunac, though, being relatively unknown, could be a good place to seek a reasonably priced property in a great location.
