The little town of Roumazières Loubert which is found in the pretty Charente countryside, combines an appealing historic aspect with a dynamic approach to 21st century life. The pretty town has enough authenticity and patrimony to appeal to those who love these old French towns, yet is well equipped for modern living and sits in an ideal location for accessing the manifold attractions of the area.
All the shops and services that you will need are all available in the town, while there are plenty of restaurants and bars too for entertainment. Look out for craft shops and artisans selling earthenware goods, as this is a great area for pottery. There is an important tile factory at Roumazières Loubert too, so should you be renovating your house you will be able to obtain local tiles at very reasonable prices.
Roumazières Loubert lies in a lovely, rural setting, but there is no shortage of things to do to keep the family happy whether for a short holiday break or over a much longer period of time. In summer you can pop to the lake which is found just beside the town, where you will find a fabulous man-made yet natural style swimming pool on the edge of a larger lake. This is manned by lifeguards in peak season, has a snack bar, sandy beaches for sunbathing and playing, picnic areas, pedaloes and fishing.
For a day with a difference, try the Velo Rail where you can travel on five seater cycles along the old railway line, a really unique way to discover your surroundings!
There are several sights of interest in Roumazières Loubert. The regal history of the Château Peyras can be re-lived every July during the "Spectacle Lumières de l'Histoire" but should you not be in town at this time don't worry, the chateau, once the home of the Black Prince, is open to the public every Sunday afternoon, or by special reservation at other times. Not content with boasting just one chateau, Roumazières Loubert has another to show you too, the Château de Chambes. Three lovely mediaeval churches and three pretty chapels complete the picture.
The Charente has to be one of the best departments in France for finding excellent family entertainment and days out. There are so many possibilities within reach of Roumazières Loubert that you will never have a reason to be bored! The town of Cognac, famed for its brandy, is close by, while a little further to the west you can enjoy the beaches and resorts of the Charente-Maritime on the glorious Atlantic coast.
Returning to the Charente, the town of Confolens has a lot to offer, especially in August when a colourful festival takes place. There are many market towns which invite you to enjoy the lively atmosphere of a traditional street market, historic towns and castles to explore, and the departmental capital city of Angoulême, where a great day's shopping can be enjoyed.
The region has a large number of fascinating theme parks, always a sure bet for keeping the younger members of the family happy. Of particular note are the Futuroscope futuristic educational park at Poitiers, and the wonderful Valley of the Monkeys where you can see hundreds of species of monkeys (as well as guinea pigs, rabbits and more creatures) living in freedom in lovely, natural surroundings.
To arrive by air you can fly to Angoulême or Limoges, with Poitiers and La Rochelle also being options. Angoulême is served by Ryanair and Limoges by Ryanair and Flybe. The train, which stops at Angoulême, provides another possibility or you can arrive by car from the N141.
The Charente, although it is probably the most expensive of the Poitou-Charentes departments, still offers some exciting bargains when it comes to property, especially if you stay away from the main towns. It's also a fantastic area to seek country properties, indeed just outside Roumazières Loubert you will find numerous properties surrounded by their own land in beautiful rural settings.
