Chef-Boutonne, which lies in the rural Deux-Sèvres region of Poitou-Charentes in western France, is an attractive market town with a peaceful atmosphere. It is perfect for those wishing to get away from it all and find their rural idyll in France. The town is set amidst the rolling fields and woodlands of one of the most unspoiled regions of France. The area around Chef-Boutonne is a haven for nature lovers, walkers and those who simply love La France Profond.
Tranquil it may be, but Chef-Boutonne is large enough to offer its residents and visitors most of life's little necessities. The town has two large supermarkets, banking facilities, schools, hairdressers and a selection of small shops. Among these are, of course, the essential boulangerie and charcuterie, without which no true French town can exist. Don't forget the weekly market, always such a pleasure to browse around, and which provides an excellent opportunity to try out your French!
The town has some pretty old streets and buildings. One building of particular interest can be found in the centre of the town, above the River Boutonne. This is an old washhouse, an attractive stone building housing a natural water source harnessed into a stone tub. This is a place which will have been an important resource and gathering point for the townsfolk before modern plumbing brought water to their homes.
The Metropolis it isn't, but Chef-Boutonne does have a few bars and a couple of very good restaurants, where you can meet friends and enjoy some excellent local specialities. Drink the locally produced cognac, and from the menu try the Foie Gras, oysters and mussels for which the region is known.
There are plenty of interesting places in the wider area which are easily accessible from Chef-Boutonne. You can visit the town of Melle, with its silver mines and ancient churches, or if you need to keep the kids happy you could take a drive to nearby Poitiers and visit the excellent theme park of Futuroscope. There are also several animal parks in the vicinity, one of the best of these being the Valley of the Monkeys. The natural wonders of the area are delightful too, with the Marais Poitevin waterways close by, and the pretty countryside dotted with water mills. It is not beyond the reach of a day trip to visit the Atlantic coast either, with La Rochelle at only an hour's drive from Chef-Boutonne.
Sports fans will find that most sports are accessible from the town, with tennis, swimming, fishing, horse-riding and cycling among the most popular. Golf addicts can also find an excellent golf course nearby.
