Lezay is a well equipped little market town that is found in the sleepy countryside of the Deux-Sèvres, in the popular region of Poitou-Charentes. Lezay is famed for its excellent market, one of the largest in the country, but it also offers a good selection of shops and services.
Lezay is an attractive, typically Charentaise town with many original old houses and buildings. The market, which is enormous and attracts both stallholders and buyers from far and wide, is held on Tuesdays. There is even a livestock section so if you want to buy some chickens or a goat to keep the grass down, this is the place to be. The town has plenty of shops and services too, with most things you are likely to require on hand within the boundaries.
Leisure time is also well catered for, as Lezay has a number of good bars, cafés and restaurants in addition to excellent sporting facilities. There is a lovely outdoor pool, perfect for keeping the kids happy on long, hot summer days, and there is also a lake for fishing, tennis courts, petanque courts and beautiful walks. Horse-riding is also available on the edge of town.
The Deux-Sèvres is a fabulous department, and there is never a shortage of things to do and see. Take a boat trip in a traditional, flat bottomed boat along the peaceful waterways of the Marais Poitevin, a network of canals and marshlands commonly known as "the Green Venice", or discover the secrets of the old silver mines that used to be a source of wealth for the area. The bustling port town of La Rochelle is near enough for a day trip, as are many of the lively coastal resorts and beautiful beaches of the Atlantic coast.
If you are fond of animals, the Monkey Park near Poitiers is great fun, or head for the amazing educational theme park Futuroscope to spend a day learning and marvelling. The main cities of the region, Poitiers and Niort are also more than worth a trip.
Poitiers and La Rochelle are the nearest airports, with Nantes and Tours also within reach. Poitiers is served by Ryanair, and La Rochelle by Flybe, easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2. The TGV also runs to all the above mentioned cities. Drivers will find Lezay from the D45/D14, which lie in between the A10 and N10 major roads.
Lezay offers some excellent bargains in property, and there is something to suit all pockets.
