Thouars – a city on a rock
The large town of Thouars is situated in western France in the Poitou-Charentes region. It is a mediaeval city of great character which stands on a rocky outcrop above the right bank of the River Thouars, a tributary of the mighty Loire. Thouars is best known for its impressive Château de la Trémoille, an edifice which has stood through many incarnations, being at times a noble residence, a barracks, a prison and a school! It is still undeniably beautiful, and draws many visitors to the town. Thouars has more historical gems to offer, however, with ancient ramparts, beautiful churches, ancient towers and floral parks to add to its charms.
|
Great for shopping
Thouars has some really good facilities whether you are in town just for a holiday or if you have chosen to make the town your new home. There are a great selection of shops, with all the usual French essentials such as boulangeries, boucheries, patisseries, La Poste (post office), as well as several good sized supermarkets which sell just about everything including the kitchen sink! To cap it all, the town hosts two excellent open air general markets, giving you two weekly chances to buy the best of the local produce and to catch up with the town's gossip.
|
And for wining and dining
Thouars is also a great place for those who enjoy the other French delight of wining and dining. The town offers a good choice of restaurants, with several varied cuisines, and of course a superb wine list will be presented wherever you go, as this is a renowned wine region.
|
Sports and leisure
If you are feeling energetic, Thouars has tennis courts and an open air swimming pool at your disposal. Close to the town you can also access horse-riding, fishing, golf, cycling, and of course, you can take part in the traditional and oh so French games of Boules and Petanque!
