The River Benaize runs through the centre of La Trimouille in the Vienne department of the Poitou-Charentes region of western France, adding to the appeal of this pretty little town. The unspoilt countryside that surrounds the town is a delight, with pastures, woodlands and, in the early summer, fields upon fields of golden sunflowers turning their massive heads to follow the sun.
It's well worth just taking a walk around this little town to soak up the simple, authentic atmosphere and to enjoy the typically Charantaise buildings and streets. The River Benaize, which traces its lazy path through the town, is a very attractive feature, and standing on the old bridge that straddles the river gives some lovely views of this tranquil place.
La Trimouille has all the usual amenities, so although it is recommended that visitors have access to a car for getting out and about and enjoying all the attractions of the region, it is possible to obtain most everyday needs without leaving the town. The amenities on offer include small shops, restaurants, bars, a post office, cinema, doctors, pharmacies and schools, as well as an excellent Tourist Advice Centre.
Every year, on July 14th (Bastille Day) La Trimouille goes "en fête", which means the whole town gives up its normal peaceful lifestyle and turns to party mode! This involves a procession of decorated floats, music and dancing and ends with a spectacular firework display. On the 29th of every month too, there is also the Hérolles Fair to enjoy.
The town has one very unusual feature, which is its "L'Isle aux Serpents", or Snake Island. It's a fascinating collection of reptiles, which may not be to everybody's taste but actually is much more fun than you might think. Children love to have the chance to see these creatures up close yet in perfect safety, and you could be amazed at what you learn in the process.
There's plenty to see and do in the region. There are two lakes within a short drive, where you can relax, swim and sunbathe, or perhaps hire a boat, with river swimming also possible along the Gartempe River. The main town of Poitiers is always worth a visit, and it is highly recommended that you take a look at the acclaimed educational theme park of Futuroscope while in town.
Close to La Trimouille is the intriguing Montmorillon, the "Town of Writers". Montmorillon has a lovely old quarter, and here you can find all manner of things to do with the art of writing, book making and literature. If you want to travel further afield, you can take a day trip to the Atlantic coast, go east to the green Limousin with its porcelain and lakes, or take a look at the celebrated chateaux of the Val de Loire.
Poitiers, Limoges, Tours, Angoulême, Bordeaux and La Rochelle all have airports offering direct flights from the UK, with Poitiers, Angoulême and La Rochelle also having TGV stops which offer the choice of train or air travel. If you prefer to drive, the town can be found between the A10, A20 and N147, along the D727/D675.
The really good news is that property prices in the Vienne are still low, with many excellent bargains to be found around La Trimouille. There aren't many places left in France these days where you can find attractive and ready to move into property for not much more than 50,000 Euros, so if your budget is tight take a look at what's on offer in and around this delightful town.
