The old town of Lusignan lies in the west of France, in the Vienne department of Poitou-Charentes. It is set on a hilltop looking out over the Vonne River Valley, with its lush farmland and pretty villages.
Lusignan offers most amenities you would expect to find in a small town, but should you require more, the large town of Poitiers is on the doorstep. There are many other towns and villages near Lusignan too, and lots of good restaurants around where you can become acquainted with the superb cuisine of the region.
The town is famed mainly for its castle, which although now in ruins, is said to be the largest fortified castle in France... even in its current state! It is also said to be the work of a singular fairy named Melusine, who (allegedly!) single handedly built this massive chateau all in one day! Now, if only all French builders were so efficient!
Hugh IV founded the Church of Notre Dame et St Junien in 1025, although there are only some small parts of the original edifice remaining today. The church is still interesting to visit, however, with its beautiful bestiary doorway and 12th century crypt.
Because the region benefits from the Gulf Stream effect, there is a good amount of warm, sunny weather to enjoy. This in turn means that there are all manner of sporting and outdoors activities to be found, so try your hand at horse-riding, tennis, cycling, walking, canoeing, kayaking or perhaps a spot of fishing. If you aren't feeling sporty but still want to be entertained, there are some great leisure attractions in this area. Poitiers has Futuroscope, a fabulous theme park and educational centre, and for something delightfully different there is also a lovely monkey park, where you can see hundreds of different varieties of monkeys living in a natural environment.
Poitiers has its own airport and there are direct flights to and from the UK with budget airline Ryanair. The super fast TGV also runs to Poitiers, so getting there just couldn't be easier! A local train can then take you on to Lusignan itself, as it has its own station.
Generally speaking, property in the Vienne represents very good value for money. This is a largely rural department, and there are some excellent opportunities to purchase farms and barns, mills and cottages, either for renovation or that have been renovated and are ready to move into. At the cheaper end of the market there are also some cosy village houses, great for helping you to get to know the neighbours and integrate into village life.
