All the charm of the Riviera... and less hassle!
The town of Menton is located in the far south-east of France in the east of the French Riviera, close to Italy. It has all the charm and sophistication of the Riviera towns, but is quieter and more understated than its better known neighbours. This gives it an appeal which draws back aficionados year after year, and if you are looking for a property on this prestigious piece of French coast, then Menton may prove to be the wisest place to put down your property roots.

A very British connection
It is also interesting to note that Menton was the last of the French towns to be maintained under British rule, and there is still a British cemetery in the town to this day. One of the most famous who sleep there is William Webb Ellis, accredited with starting the game of rugby, and whose name is on the prestigious rugby world cup!

Belle Epoque charm
The town is full of Belle Epoque charm, and much of the grand old architecture so beloved of the Noel Coward set is still in evidence today. Menton is built on a hillside, and this rises steeply away from the coast, leading the visitor through a maze of narrow streets and alleyways. These are often in the form of steps flanked by flower decked houses, Provençal pink stucco fading in the strong sunlight. Some of the steps and squares are set with pretty pebbled areas in intricate patterns, and these add a distinctive style to the town.

Shopping and dining
There are plenty of places in the town which are excellent for those who enjoy a little retail therapy... it may not be Nice but there are still plenty of opportunities to spend money! Menton also has a great selection of restaurants, with many of these placed down near the fishing port and the newer purpose built marina where the pleasure boats are moored. Cafés line the squares and promenades, in the best of old seaside resort traditions, and all kinds of cuisines are on offer... take your pick.

The lemon festival...
If you are in Menton in February or March you may get to see the delightful lemon festival which takes place in the town at this time of year. With processions filled with lemon-themed floats, and the air redolent with the scent of citrus fruits and mimosa, it really is a wonderful experience to simply be there!

Seeing Menton’s sights
Another uniquely “Menton experience” is to take the little train that runs around the old parts of town in order to do your sightseeing. You will still need to get out and climb the steep steps to get the real flavour of Menton however!

A Riviera scene
The town and its surroundings are as typically Riviera as you can find. Palm trees sway in the breeze, blue seas lap the beaches and even bluer skies sit above the terracotta rooftops, with the whole baked in the strong southern sun. The beaches are safe and pleasant for families, and the daily market, where you can purchase fresh fish, olives, honey and other Provençal produce, add up to a picture which has immense appeal.

Out and about
Menton is extremely fortunate in its location. Charming as the town itself is, there are many fascinating places within reach of the town. There is no excuse ever to be bored when you have Menton as a base. Italy is only a short drive or train ride away, and you can also visit the tiny but fabulously wealthy principality of Monaco. The towns of the Riviera are close at hand as well, so take a day to go shopping in Nice, star spotting in Cannes or sunbathing in St Tropez!

Sporting activities available
Lots of different sporting activities are available from the town, so if you are of an active disposition you can choose from swimming, sailing, horse-riding, golf, walking and cycling, to name but a few of the most popular pursuits.

How to get there
Reaching Menton from the UK is very simple, as the town lies close to Nice International Airport. The airport is served by bmibaby, British Airways, Air France, easyJet, bmi, Jet2, flybe and Aer Lingus. Meanwhile, the TGV will get you to Marseille, from where you can pick up a train to Nice.

Property prices and availability in and around Menton
Property in Menton is... well, expensive. There is no escaping the fact that if you want to live on the French Riviera you will have to pay the price. There is, however, a good rental market so that if you are not living in your property all year round you should be able to let it out for a good return. Property types vary from the old style belle Epoque apartments to the newer villas, mainly clustered around the eastern part of town.
