Touching Italy
Called PACA by locals this is a Mediterranean coastal region in the south-east, stretching from its most western department, Bouches-du-Rhône, across to the Alpes-Maritimes where it borders Italy. With its sandy beaches, craggy cliffs, tranquil bays, mountains, vineyards and picturesque villages, it is one of the most popular areas in the whole country, second only to Paris. And with the region having a warm climate, enjoying 300 days of sunshine every year, it is easy to see why.

Not just a pretty place
The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region is the second most important region in France's economy. The region incorporates the following departments: the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the Bouches-du-Rhône, the Vaucluse and the Alpes-Maritimes. The area has always attracted large numbers of artists. In 1892 Paul Signac landed at St-Tropez and was so taken with the view that he stopped to paint, and ended up living there. Many other painters have studied Provence's landscape, including Van Gogh, Picasso and Auguste Renoir. Much of their work is on display in the region's galleries.

Historic Provence
This is also an historic region, having been a major crossroads for different civilisations. It has a wealth of sites which are worth a journey in themselves, including Avignon and its Palais des Papes, Arles and Orange, where the spirit of ancient Rome can still be felt, the dazzling eighteenth century jewel of Aix-en-Provence and finally the legendary St-Tropez. You'll succumb to their magic in no time, and the same goes for the local cuisine, with its garlic and olive oil.

The Var - Provence or Côte d'Azur?
There is an element of debate about where the Var belongs, and it is said that Provence is to the west of St. Tropez whilst anything east of this can be considered to belong to the Côte d'Azur along with the Alpes-Maritimes (this does not include Monaco, of course, which is a separate principality altogether).

Yachts, casinos, beaches and wine - the good life
Termed the 'French Riviera' by the British, this prosperous region is a hotspot with the rich and famous from all over the world. The climate is only one of the reasons why flocks of people visit each year. PACA combines exclusive resorts for the more glamorous with a certain earthiness, for those who prefer to appreciate a variety of landscapes and dramatic coastlines. It is also dotted with national parks and nature reserves, including the famous Camargue. The region is famous for its wines, notably the Côtes du Luberon and Côtes de Provence.

Getting there
Communication links are good, especially for those hoping to visit Corsica and North Africa. A recent increase in budget flights, to the UK, Spain and Italy, is also an advantage of buying in this region.

Property prices in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
Property is not cheap in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. In fact, it is the second most expensive region to live in after Paris. Prices are many times more expensive than in less popular areas of France.
