Bargemon - typically Provençal
Bargemon is a typically Provençal village situated in the inland part of the Var, in south-eastern France. Although it is famed as the location for the French holiday home of celebrity couple Posh and Becks, Bargemon is usually more likely to attract artists and writers with its winsome charm. With its old stone houses, narrow streets and shady squares with their sparkling crystal fountains, it is perhaps not surprising that for many, Bargemon is the prettiest village in Provence... that is an accolade not easily earned, as there is some stiff competition in the region!

A sense of history
There is a real and present sense of history in Bargemon, and it is worth paying a little attention to some of the ancient buildings that grace this lovely village. There are remains of the old ramparts that once fortified Bargemon against attackers, and it is still possible to see the sites of the old prison, the Sarrasin tower and various ancient gateways to the village. There's a museum and an interesting old church to visit, and the village also has olive mills where the olive oil is squeezed from the ripe, locally grown olives.

Bargemon is really just a good sized village, but it is extremely well equipped with shops and services to make life as comfortable and easy as possible for its residents and visitors. You will find a supermarket as well as local shops such as boulangeries, a bank, a pharmacy, art galleries and a good selection of excellent little restaurants.

Sports and leisure
Bargemon is in a great location for sports fans, and the wonderful Provençal countryside is superb for anyone who loves an active, outdoorsy way of life. The village has tennis courts and a swimming pool, and more swimming can be had locally in lakes and, a short distance south, the Med! Nearby there is fishing, golf, horse-riding, paragliding, cycling and wonderful walking.

Out and about
The Var is a truly beautiful department, and can lay claim to being one of the finest in France. Diverse in its landscapes and pleasures, the Var has the sophisticated resorts of the Med to its south, and the wild, aromatic scrublands of inland Provence to its north. It is a land of wild lavender and thyme, of honey, olives and wine, of sunshine and ancient stones. Places to visit from Bargemon include the city of Toulon, the film capital of Cannes or the glitzy resort of St Tropez. Inland there are any number of beautiful villages bursting with history and character, such as Mont St Victoire or Callas. Don't miss the incredible "Grand" canyon of Verdon either, as it is a memorable sight well worth the drive.

Property prices and availability in and around Bargemon
Prices in pretty Provence tend to be high, so it isn't the best place for those on a real shoestring budget. There are bargains to be found sometimes though, so it's worth keeping a weather eye on the market. If you have the kind of funds that Posh and Becks have access to, then it's a great place to seek that secluded mansion and country estate, but there are also some lovely and more modest possibilities, such as charming village houses, apartments and little farmhouses which are more realistic for most of us.
