Callas - under sunny southern skies
The village of Callas is found straggling up a hillside in the beautiful southern region of Provence, in the department of the Var. In a region where the climate is unsurpassed in the whole of France, this village encapsulates all that is delightful about Provence, and makes the prefect case for the desirability of Provençal property. Callas has history oozing from every corner, yet with the addition of modern facilities that make it one of Provence's perfect hidden gems.
|
Beautiful buildings
Callas has some fascinating and rather beautiful old buildings. These include the Mairie, with its bell tower from the 17th century and an interesting wrought iron belfry, and the lovely Notre Dame Church, sitting in its lofty position above the rest of the village. The streets and houses themselves are also pretty and in many cases, very old, with dark alleyways shaded from the hot sun and the typically Provençal "step streets", passable only on foot... or by donkey should you happen to have one handy!
|
Points of interest
Among the things worth seeing in Callas is the old "lavoir" or public bath house, where it is still possible to read the sign that declares "Douches". You can also find the ruins of a 13th century chateau, a restored (though sadly not working) water wheel and an old olive mill. The olive mill is now a gift shop, perfect for sending home a token of your Provençal idyll!
|
Modern facilities
The village offers the unusual modern facility of a gym and health club... a concession to the needs of a new type of resident! Callas also has a small supermarket and local shops, cafés, bars and tabacs. There are also some excellent restaurants close to the village where you can really savour the wonderful gastronomy of this sunshine region. The nearest really large town is Draguignan, close enough to be very handy for those big shopping needs!
|
Out and about
The landscape of the interior of the Var, where Callas is situated, is a wild and rocky paradise, redolent with the scents of Mediterranean herbs such as lavender, rosemary and thyme. The ever present song of the cicadas fills the air, and the olive and lemon groves that proliferate here leave you in no doubt that you are in the south of France. So, where to go? In the Var you are spoiled for choice, with the Mediterranean Sea and the buzzing city of Toulon close by, and many characterful and historic villages all within an easy drive of Callas.
|
Activities on offer
Sportsmen will find plenty to occupy them, as apart from the sea sports available at the coast, there are chances for swimming, fishing, walking, horse-riding, tennis and even golf not too far away. Then of course, there is wine tasting always available for those whose tastes are less active!
|
How to get there
To reach Callas you can fly to Marseille or Toulon, or to Nice or Montpellier which, although a little further away, offer an even greater choice of airlines and departure points around the UK. Marseille is served by British Airways, Aer Lingus, easyJet and Ryanair; Toulon by Ryanair; Nice by bmibaby, British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe; and Montpellier by easyJet and Ryanair. If driving, follow the A8 and then head for Draguignan.

Property prices and availability in and around Callas
Provence isn't a cheap area, so forget the idea of finding a chateau for less than a 100,000 Euros... this isn't the area for that. However, the Var, especially the interior, is less pricey than the coastal regions of Provence and also less expensive in general then the Luberon, so don't write it off as out of your reach... it might not be! Remember too that this region is extremely popular with holiday makers, so rental values are likely to be good, helping you to offset costs.
