Discover Seillans - a mediaeval beauty

Mediaeval Seillans, which is found in the lovely countryside of the Var department of Provence in the south-east of France, is notable as one of France's most beautiful villages. The village has all the attributes of character that could possibly be hoped for, with twisting, cobbled streets, shady squares and tiered mediaeval houses. Perched high on a hilltop, overlooking forests, vineyards and lavender fields, Seillans welcomes you with all the sights, scents and warmth of Provence.

See its sights and attractions

Seillans is so full of character and charm that its appeal is taken as a whole rather than broken down into various sights and attractions. The mediaeval ambience of the historic centre is powerful and authentic, and has retained many original features. Your first sight of Seillans is of a mellow, typically warm coloured Provençal town, nestling into a hillside otherwise covered with dark green pine trees.

Admire the town's charming and ancient buildings

In the lower part of the village, there is a pretty little square complete with an old lavoir and a fountain, and then as you begin your climb to the top, you pass through cobbled streets and a number of little squares as you go. All the buildings are old and very charming, but keep an eye out for the more important monuments which include a castle, a couple of chapels dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, and the Saracen door.

Amenities on offer

The village is popular with tourists, and can be quite busy in the summer. There are lots of cheerful little shops, cafés, and arts and crafts outlets which add colour and provide most of what you need. The shops include a bakery, a butcher's, a pharmacy, a supermarket and a tabac. There is also a bank, post office, and 24-hour cash machine. Meanwhile Seillans restaurants offer excellent Provençal fare, with the local wines being very good and making a perfect accompaniment to the Mediterranean flavours.

Enjoy Seillans's markets and festivals

Seillans has open air markets, arts exhibitions and festivals to enjoy, with two of the biggest events being the annual pottery market, and the two-week long international music festival held in August each year.

Out and about

There can hardly be imagined a better region in which to enjoy the very best of France, and the location of Seillans makes it perfect to use as a base for further exploration. There are so many lovely places accessible from the town that you will find yourself spoilt for choice. The fabulous and cosmopolitan city of Nice is near enough for a day trip, and the film festival town of Cannes is even closer.

Explore lively Frejus and St Raphael

Frejus and St Raphael are great destinations for enjoying a lively holiday atmosphere and lovely beaches of the Med, and it is possible to get a bus from Seillans to these towns. The neighbouring town of Grasse, centre of the perfume industry, is also a very interesting place to visit.

Sports and leisure activities

Provence is a wonderful place too, for sports and leisure activities, and you will find plenty on offer from Seillans. Try horse-riding in the hills, or walking or cycling, or swimming and water sports at the nearby lake or the coast. If you aren't feeling quite so active, a tour of the vineyards ending with a wine tasting and opportunity to purchase local wines may suit better!

How to get there

Nice is just 65 kilometres distant, so the international airport there is a perfect arrival point if travelling by air. The airport is served by many airlines, including British Airways, bmibaby, easyJet, bmi, Jet2, flybe, Air France and Aer Lingus, so getting to the region is simplicity itself. The TGV runs to Nice and Cannes for those who prefer to travel by train. Drivers can find Seillans on the D19, which can be found from the A8.

Property prices and availability in and around Seillans

Property in and near Seillans tends to be priced highly, as this is one of France's most desirable areas. If you have a generous budget, the sky is the limit, and there are certainly a huge variety of prestige and luxury properties to be found near the village. However, those working to a tight budget will need to look a little further afield to find affordable property. There are apartments and small village houses around, but prices for these are high in comparison with most other parts of France. The neighbouring village of Fayence offers slightly lower priced property, and may be worth considering.
