Cavaillon – a perfect Provence
Despite being a large town with some 23,000 inhabitants, Cavaillon, a town of the rural Vaucluse in the south-east of France, does not relinquish its Provençal charm to its size. There are plenty of traditional Provençal buildings and colours to enjoy here, not to mention the scents and flavours that so epitomise this blessed region to its devotees. It also occupies an exceptionally good position, making it easily accessible from the UK (close to airports, railway stations and the auto route), as well as rendering it a great base from which to discover all the wonders of Provence for yourself.
|
Lots to see
Take time to explore the town itself, before moving on to the rest of the region, or you will miss out on a lot. There are Roman arches, ancient narrow streets, a church and a hermitage, museums, typically Provençal buildings, trompe l'oeil artwork and much much more. Then there are markets and antiques markets, shops selling local delicacies such as delicious goats' cheeses and, of course, the famous Cavaillon melons, straight from the farms.

Shopping and dining in Cavaillon
The town has excellent facilities and those whose idea of a good time includes a little retail therapy, won't be disappointed in what is on offer here in Cavaillon. Restaurants and bars abound too, and there are no shortages of places to go when the sun goes down, to continue enjoying life on a Provençal theme. One of the best examples of entertainment Provençal style is the annual melon festival, with parades, cooking with melons, tastings, music and dancing deep into the warm scented southern nights. Oh, and there's excellent local wine too... but did you expect any less?

Out and about
The whole of Provence is around you, so whether you hanker after discovering the lavender fields of the Luberon, brought to such recognition by Peter Mayle in his book "A Year in Provence" or whether you hope to head for the coast and bathe in the blue waters of the Med, you won't be lost for something to do if you are based in Cavaillon. Sports fans will also find that there are lots of possibilities for getting active, from bathing in the lakes, rivers and sea, to pony trekking in the lavender scented garrigues or to playing golf in the more sophisticated country clubs of the region.
|
How to get there
To get to Cavaillon from the UK is easy as it lies in an area that is well served by airlines, auto routes and rail services. The nearest airports are those of Marseille and Montpellier. Marseille is served by British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Aer Lingus and bmibaby, while Montpellier is served by easyJet and Ryanair. Rail travel is even easier, as you can get a TGV from Paris or Lille straight to nearby Avignon. Drivers, take note, the A7 auto route runs close to Cavaillon. A car is recommended when you are staying or living in the region, as there are so many wonderful places to see.

Property prices and availability in and around Cavaillon
Provence, as you know, isn't the cheapest place in France to seek property to purchase. It's just too beautiful, too well equipped with great restaurants and sporting and leisure facilities to make it anything else. Having said that, keep your eyes on the market and you can sometimes spot a bargain. At the time of writing there is a semi-detached house with tennis courts and swimming pool as well as a great garden, for sale at just less than 250,000 Euros! I wouldn't expect it to be there for long though.
