Annemasse, last city in France…
Annemasse, situated in eastern France, is the last city in this area of France before you cross the border into Switzerland. Being so close to Geneva and the swish resorts of the French Alps such as Chamonix, Évian-les-Bains and others, would seem to imply a grandeur that the town does not aspire to. Annemasse is not for the pretentious, nor the seekers of non stop nightlife. It is a city of considerable size and economic influence, but its nature and ambience are calm and practical rather than sophisticated and pacy.

A history inextricably linked with Geneva
The fortunes of Annemasse have always been inextricably linked with those of its Swiss neighbour, Geneva. The city sprang from humble origins, only growing massively when economic factors brought about by the two world wars came into play. The economic downturn experienced by Geneva in 1982 also influenced the growth of Annemasse into the second largest urban development in the Haute-Savoie.

Recent face lift!
Like many an ageing lady, Annemasse has recently been given a face lift. The town centre has been transformed from a slightly plain and gloomy place to an open, clean and attractive hub of city life. The pastel-coloured buildings are fresh in the summer sunlight, and a hitherto lacking sense of light and space has been created. The town is no longer unattractive, so if you haven’t been for a while, give it a fresh look.

Shops galore
Annemasse may not consider itself the sophisticated centre of the universe, but it lacks nothing when it comes to shopping. There are numerous large and small shops, including an excellent choice of supermarkets. All mod cons are available in the city.
Annemasse is also well equipped with restaurants, of all varieties including many good ethnic choices.

What to do in Annemasse
Once you have explored the shops and restaurants of Annemasse, you may like to pop over the border into Switzerland and enjoy the cultural delights of Geneva. Here there are a wide choice of museums, art galleries, and theatres, and all on the doorstep of Annemasse. Outside the city there are the usual array of sports available and as Annemasse is considered an important gateway town to the Alps, it is an easy matter to travel up to the great snow resorts of Chamonix and Thollon, or to the elegant spa resort of Évian-les-Bains.
