The little village of Cordon, which lies in the spectacular surroundings of the Haute-Savoie department in eastern France, is often referred to as "The Balcony of Mont Blanc", so stunning are the views of the mountain from the village. The village is perfect for both skiers and non skiers, such is its traditional charm and glorious setting.
Cordon is picture postcard perfect. If you close your eyes and imagine an idyllic, traditional Alpine village, then Cordon is exactly what you will have in mind. From its traditional, Savoyard houses to its beautiful Baroque church, Cordon is a magnificent example of what an Alpine village ought to be. There is a complete absence of high rise blocks and utilitarian concrete, yet there is access to some of the best skiing in Europe.
It doesn't stop there, either, as winter is not the only season you can enjoy in Cordon. Autumn, when the colours turn from summer greens to burnished coppers, rich reds and vibrant yellows, is a visual feast, and all the seasons bring their own pleasures and activities.
Cordon is only a small village, but it has good amenities. There are small shops, a supermarket, friendly bars and numerous restaurants to be found around the outskirts. Far larger facilities and après ski can be found just down the road in Sallanches. With regard to skiing and other mountain sports, there is plenty to do in any season. Cordon has access to fantastic skiing and snowboarding for all levels of ability and all ages, but when the snows are melted there is no shortage of fun to be had. Walkers, mountain bikers, climbers, white water fans, you won't be bored around Cordon!
Just a fifteen-minute drive will take you to the Mont Blanc tramway, which in turn will take you up to the Bionassay Glacier, from where you have amazing views of the area. This is also the start mark, in summer, for the climb to the summit of this awesome mountain. Nearby too, are the famed resorts of Chamonix, Megève and Annecy, as well as the elegant lakeside towns of Lake Geneva for a quite different ambience. You can even take a boat ride across the lake to Switzerland.
Geneva is the nearest airport, and it has flights with several different airlines leaving the UK from various departure points. If you want to travel by rail you can link to a local train from Geneva and arrive at Sallanches. Or you could get the ski special train from the UK to Moûtiers or Bourg Saint Maurice. Should you be driving, access to the village is from the Sallanches exit on the A40, where it sits on the smaller D113 road.
