Flaine - an Alpine resort with a difference
The resort of Flaine, which lies in the Haute-Savoie department of the French Alps, is a ski resort with a difference. There are no Christmas card chalets here, no ancient churches nor traditional industries. Flaine is a purpose built resort, built purely for skiing. If this sounds stark and unappealing to you, it may be that Flaine is not the place for you.
|
Safe ski resort with stunning scenery
However, if you have a passion for skiing and don't want to waste time getting to the pistes, perhaps have children in tow and want a safe, family friendly resort, or need a modern, well designed lock up and leave apartment with no worries in attendance, think again. Oh... and the scenery is stunning.
|
Sleek design
Flaine is a sleekly designed modern resort with a heart that is pure “skiing”. Everything is organised so that it is easy to reach the pistes, easy to return to the resort without walking or driving for miles after skiing and easy to reach the shops and amenities so that you do not have to waste time on trivialities when you could be on the slopes!
|
Apartments with all mod cons and home comforts
Flaine is built on three different levels, and consists mainly of unobtrusive concrete apartment blocks, equipped with all mod cons and home comforts. In town, everything is located centrally, with all the necessary shops on hand. It isn't, however, a designer shopping paradise, and it has no intention of becoming one, as the whole philosophy of Flaine is focused on skiing. The car free centre of town means that it is safe for children too, as well as clean and pleasant.
|
Social life in Flaine
Flaine is a very family oriented resort, and the social side of life reflects this. Flaine isn't bursting with loud nightclubs, nor is it full of swanky cocktail bars. It does, however, have a good selection of friendly bars and restaurants, and you can even catch a disco or a fun karaoke session in one or two of them!
|
Flaine has a cultural side
Flaine has a cultural side too, with a library, a cinema and an art gallery and the resort often plays host to classical music and jazz concerts. Kids will have fun in the bowling alley, and the fitness centre will help you hit the slopes in great shape!
|
Snow business
In terms of what it has to offer skiers, Flaine is pretty much unbeatable. The resort has the best snow record in the world for a non glacial resort, and you are almost guaranteed good snow conditions from December to May. The Grand Massif, on which the resort lies, offers superb skiing, and Flaine caters for all ages and abilities. There are excellent ski schools for beginners and children, and plenty of nursery slopes for the less confident to find their feet... or skis! Expert skiers can find access to some good off piste skiing in great scenery, but it is probably in its facilities for intermediate skiers that the resort really excels. Flaine is also popular with snowboarders, and other snow-based activities in the resort include snow-shoeing and ice driving.
|
And in summer?
So what happens to a purpose built and single minded snow resort when there isn't any snow? In Flaine's case, what you have left when the snow melts is a well equipped mountain resort set in some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. It makes an ideal base for walking, climbing, mountain biking, horse-riding and any other outdoor pursuits that you can think of. There's even golf on the doorstep!
|
How to get there
Getting to Flaine from the UK isn't too difficult. The best airports to head for are those of Lyon (Air France, bmibaby, British Airways, easyJet or bmi) and Geneva (British airways, easyJet, flybe, Jet2 or Aer Lingus). Rail travel is another option, and there is a special ski train run by Eurostar which will take you all the way from Waterloo to Bourg St Maurice or Moûtiers!

Property prices and availability in and around Flaine
The French Alps are an expensive area in which to buy property. That said, Flaine can represent better value than some Alpine resorts, and there is a chance to buy a small and simple apartment without creating a replica of the national debt in your own pocket! Rental values are good here too, so if you don't plan to live here all year round you can recoup some cash through renting.
