While some ski resorts in the Alps are ghost towns out of season, this is definitely not the case with the village of Les Carroz d'Araches. This delightfully traditional Alpine village, set in glorious landscapes including soaring mountains, turquoise lakes and cool, dark forests, offers a multitude of activities for all ages and tastes at all times of year. Les Carroz has access to no less than five top ski stations, and is linked to four of them, but it is so much more than just a ski resort.
For a relatively small village, Les Carroz d'Araches has a really good range of amenities. From plentiful shops, bars and restaurants to all the usual services (doctors, schools, crèches for the little ones, library), there are also art galleries and museums to add a cultural element to life. The traditional Alpine design of the town adds a rustic appeal, and the central square is home to a colourful street market on Tuesday mornings where you can find wonderful local produce as well as a variety of other goods on sale. The heritage includes lovely old churches and chapels, monuments such as the stone oratory cross, historic features like an old bread oven and authentic Alpine architecture throughout.
Excellent skiing goes without saying, of course, as this village is linked to the illustrious ski stations of Samoens, Flaine, Morillon and Sixt, which are among the best in the Alps. Other winter sports and activities are cross country skiing, dog sledding, ice skating, snowboarding and snow-shoeing. Ski schools for all abilities are easily found, as are equipment hire and sales centres.
The village also has a swimming pool and sports centre. In summer, when the countryside has turned from white to green, the sports change but are just as numerous. Try mountain biking, pony trekking, golf or white water rafting... and that's just for starters!
There are many lovely hamlets and villages to discover, nestling in the folds of the mountains. There are traditional farms to see, festivals to attend and glorious natural lakes to enjoy. Most days a market can be found locally, and frequent special events take place throughout both winter and summer. If you want to get a little further afield, take a trip to Lake Geneva, where a whole new world of activities and atmosphere opens up.
Geneva is the closest airport, served by a variety of airlines, but Chambéry, Grenoble and Lyon are all within reach. You can also travel by rail as the region is served by Eurostar and TGV services, with a ski special running to Bourg St Maurice and Moûtiers in season. The town is found on the D106, which is easily accessed from the main A40.
Property in popular Alpine ski areas is never cheap, but there can be bargains to be found. If price is an issue, consider a leaseback arrangement on an apartment, with prices starting at around 169,000 Euros. But if you want the last word in luxury and have over 800,000 or a million Euros to spend, this is also possible with some fabulous chalets on the market.
