The spa town of St Gervais les Bains, lying virtually at the very foot of the imposing Mont Blanc, is a town of such charm that it could have been taken straight from a picture postcard, snow-laden in winter and robed in fresh shades of green in summer. It not only attracts the winter sports brigade but also those who simply revel in its authentic Savoyard character and setting.
St Gervais les Bains has its beginnings in the early 19th century, when it first rose to prominence as a spa town. There is a weekly market too, held every Thursday morning, so along with the old and authentic architecture, including a lovely baroque church, the village offers so much more than just fantastic skiing... which it has as well, of course!
St Gervais les Bains has access to some of the best skiing in Europe, so there is no question about its credentials as a top destination for skiers. There's a snow park too, to keep the young, trendy snow boarders occupied, and lots of other mountain activities both in winter and summer, including horse-riding, canyoning, paragliding, tennis, fishing, and swimming. Once off the slopes you could go to the ice rink, enjoy the shops or treat yourself to a spa treatment in the thermal centre. Then there is the mountain railway to take you up to see some of the most dramatic views in the world.
It's not a huge resort, but there is plenty of aprés ski to enjoy. Choose from a quiet visit to the cinema, an elegant evening at a traditional Savoyard restaurant, a lively time in one of the local bars or put on your dancing shoes and dance the night away at the Duplex, the village's trendy nightclub.
The best airports to head for are Lyon, Geneva, Grenoble or Chambéry. Lyon is served by Air France, British Airways, easyJet and bmi; Geneva by British Airways, Air France, easyJet, flybe, Jet2 and Aer Lingus; Grenoble by Ryanair and easyJet; and Chambéry by flybe, Jet2 and Astaeus. Possibly the best way to travel from the UK, however, is on the TGV or ski express train, as you can get all the way from England to Bourg St Maurice or Moûtiers.
Any resort town with access to this kind of skiing is not going to be cheap. That's the bad news... but there is good news too. Rental values in St Gervais are excellent, as the village is popular and beautiful enough to attract tourists in or out of the winter season, something which doesn't always apply to Alpine resorts. The property available in the village is attractive in its own right too, so you don't have to compromise your aesthetic principles to own a property in a great ski area!

Interesting fact: Perhaps unexpectedly, the village offers almost as much to do in summer as in winter, with an open air swimming pool, tennis courts, fishing and all manner of warm weather activities not usually associated with a winter resort!
