Thônes - an Alpine market town

Thônes is a lovely market town that is set in the enviable surroundings of the French Alps. Close to the capital of Annecy, Thônes is surrounded by mountains, lakes and forests. It's a great destination for winter skiing holidays, or peaceful summers in the clear mountain air.

Enjoy life in Thônes

Thônes is just a small town, but there's a lot going on here! Various fetes and celebrations take place in and near to the town and there are interesting cultural activities to enjoy as well. The town has a museum to the Resistance movement, a forest museum, a museum of local heritage and many more activities and events to discover. Cheese making and Alpine agriculture are a big part of life here, and visits to artisanal cheese makers are always enjoyable. Thônes is also a market town, in the best French tradition. Markets are held every Saturday, with small specialist markets setting up at other times.

Amenities on offer

Thônes has a good collection of local shops and amenities too. These include a supermarket, small specialist shops, a post office, banks and all the necessities. Cafés, restaurants and bars are also easy to find about the town. There are also good sports facilities such as an outdoor heated swimming pool, horse-riding stables, a tennis club and an Adventure Park for the younger members of the family. Or for the older ones if you happen to be in touch with your inner child!

Winter sports and summer activities both available

Thônes is situated about twenty minutes from the big ski resorts of La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand, Le Croix Fry and Chinaillon. So while staying in Thônes doesn't afford the possibility of a ski in, ski out lifestyle, skiing and snow sports are very much on the agenda. Golf courses are found a short drive from the town at Annecy and Le Grand Bornand, and Annecy also offers many activities on and around its beautiful lake. Summer sports available from a base in Thônes include rock climbing, canyoning, paragliding, horse-riding, beach activities at the Lake Annecy and many more. Aside from sports and leisure activities, Annecy is a wonderful place to visit for its beauty, shops and gourmet restaurants.

How to get there

Geneva has the nearest airport, and is only about 40 minutes from Thônes. Even closer, at Annecy, is a TGV station, so getting to the town by air or rail is really easy. Drivers will find Thônes on the D909. The nearest major road is the A41.
