Verchaix – an authentic Savoyard village
Verchaix is an authentic Savoyard village that lies in the Haute-Savoie department of the French Alps, in the east of France. If you like your skiing or, come to that, any other Alpine activities (at whatever time of year), within the context of a beautiful, unspoiled and traditional village, then Verchaix could well be just what you are looking for.

Christmas card landscapes
In winter, the old village has Christmas card landscapes that cannot fail to appeal. The chalets are traditionally styled, and the village has escaped the concrete monstrosities that have spring up in many a ski resort. In summer, the village takes on a completely different look, with gaily coloured Alpine flowers bedecking the chalet window boxes, and proving once and for all that there is no "bad time" to be in an Alpine village! It is also worth noting that the area is known for its sunshine, so much so that vines producing some very good wines are grown there on the south-facing slopes!

Shops and amenities
Verchaix isn't large, and it certainly doesn't offer the same massive shopping centres and entertainment facilities of the big resorts such as Morillon, but it does have its fair share of useful amenities, including, of course, ski and sports equipment sales and hire shops. There are also local style shops where you can purchase groceries, fabulous chocolates, excellent wine and other necessities. If you require more shopping, Morillon and Samoëns are both situated nearby, with supermarkets and a greater choice of shops and services.

Wining and dining in Verchaix
In Verchaix itself there are a number of very good and varied bars and restaurants, so you can relax completely in the evenings whether you have been zooming down the pistes, climbing the mountains, dog sledding or simply walking, watching and wondering at the fabulous sites and scenes.
|
Summer sports, winter fun
Verchaix offers sporting fun in both summer and winter... and no doubt in autumn and spring too! There is no bad time to be there, the mountains are beautiful at all times of year, and there is always plenty to do. The winter offers excellent skiing, with access to all the great slopes and resorts of the Grand Massif ski area. Other sports include dog sledding, snow shoeing, ice climbing, snow boarding and tobogganing. Summer activities include rock climbing, swimming, tennis, walking, mountain biking and parapenting.

How to get there
It isn't difficult to reach Verchaix from the UK. The best way to travel is probably by TGV... take the Eurostar to Paris, then catch a TGV to nearby Cluses. If you prefer to travel by air you could fly to Geneva, St Etienne, Chambéry, Grenoble or Lyon. Geneva is served by British Airways, Air France, easyJet, flybe, Jet2 and Aer Lingus; St Etienne by Ryanair; Chambéry by flybe, Jet2 and Astraeus; Grenoble by Ryanair and easyJet; and finally Lyon by Air France, British Airways, easyJet and bmi. Drivers can access the village from the D907, the village lying close to the A40.

Property prices and availability in and around Verchaix
Property in the good ski areas of the Haute-Savoie is not cheap. That said, some are cheaper than others, and property in Verchaix does seem to offer good value for money, especially if you prefer traditionally styled chalets to large apartment blocks.
