For buying and selling property in Savoie
Savoie is located in the east of the Rhone-Alpes, bordering Italy. It only became a part of France in 1860. Between this department and its northern neighbour, Haute-Savoie, you will find the incredible mountains of Savoy, which reach such great heights that they even tower over the French Alps.
Historical Chambery is the departmental capital. The town is ideally situated to link Italy and France and serves as an important crossroads. In the 13th and 14th Centuries the town gained political importance as a number of counts took over and shaped its development. It was these rulers who came across a shroud they claimed belonged to Jesus. When Turin emerged as the main regional power base, however, in the 16th Century it was moved there instead. Chambery's old quarter is built around one of the Counts' castles and contains a maze of cobbled streets and wide courtyards.
Val d’Isere is a highly popular resort in the French Alps above the Tarentaise Valley. There has been a settlement here for thousands of years but it wasn’t until 1932 when the concept of skiing on the hills was first taken up that the town sprung into life. If you’ve got an appetite for adrenalin, try La Face de Bellevarde, used for the 1992 Winter Olympics.

There’s a lot of choice when it comes to flying. British Airways flies to Lyon Airport from Birmingham, Gatwick and Manchester. Air France has services from Heathrow to Lyon Airport. They also both fly to Geneva airport just over the Swiss border. A host of budget airlines fly to the French Alps: Ryanair fly to Chamberry, Lyon and Geneva from Stansted. EasyJet travel to Geneva from Manchester, Gatwick and Liverpool. BMI Baby, Virgin Express and Aer Lingus also all fly into Geneva from the UK. After a quick comparison of their prices and a look at a map you shouldn’t have any trouble in working out the best flight for you.
If taking to the skies is not for you then there is an easy alternative. The TGV service will take you all the way to Lyon or Grenoble from the Channel Tunnel (changing at Paris) in comfort and speed.
Val d'Isere and other ski resorts in the French Alps have a lengthy ski season, while Chambery is popular year round. So both are secure investments for letting property. In the latter you can find a house awaiting renovation starting from just 60,000 euros.
