Watery origins
The Aquitaine region is most famous for its beaches and wine, though it also has an abundance of bastides, chateaux, mountains and countryside. It was named by the Romans who were impressed at the many rivers running through the land. It has, in the past, been ruled by the Kings of England.

Mussels galore!
These days though, there is no doubt that this is a French region. Aquitaine enjoys great food and wine. A few oysters washed down with a dry white wine in the Arcachon Bay, pipérade and Irouléguy rosé with the wild Basque countryside as a backdrop, scrambled eggs with truffles in Périgord, confit de canard in a bastide in Lot-et-Garonne, or an Armagnac savoured in the Chalosse... the choice is yours. The Bordeaux is a major wine producing area, while the Bassin d’Arcachon, a natural inland sea with the largest beach in Europe, produces 90% of the country’s mussels.

Dordogne - a favourite with foreign buyers
The Dordogne department – a long established favourite with foreign buyers belongs to Aquitaine. Outside the Dordogne, however, Aquitaine has not really attracted many British buyers. In recent years, the government has taken big strides in improving communication links, which should increase the number of people considering property in the wider region.

A veritable fruit factory
Aquitaine is not very densely populated. The main economic activities are agricultural. Locals are always guaranteed fresh fruit in the supermarkets as the region is a major producer of apricots, plums, nectarines, melons, peaches, strawberries and apples to name but a few. The landscape varies considerably across Aquitaine from flat sandy plains to distinctly hilly areas nearer the foothills of the Pyrenees. There are a number of sizeable woodland areas, the largest being the Landes de Gascogne.

Perfect for water sports and skiing
The crashing waves that fall on Aquitaine’s Atlantic coast makes it one of the finest surfing locations in the world, attracting many professional competitors to Lacanau, Hossegor and Biarritz. This probably isn’t the best place to have a relaxing swim! However, there are plenty of opportunities to try out some water sports. What’s more, skiing is only a short distance away in the Pyrenees, which also caters for hikers, as do the gentle Landes inclines. Meanwhile fans of rafting and canyoning can enjoy the thrills of launching into mountain streams.

What about property prices and travel to the region?
Property prices have not increased as quickly in Aquitaine as they have in other regions and remain reasonably affordable. The exception to this rule is the Dordogne, which tends to be more expensive. Aquitaine is not as easy to get to as many other parts of France and this appears to have hindered the growth of property prices throughout most of the region. However, Aquitaine’s fortune appears to be changing as a number of cheap airlines have now begun serving the area.
