Welcome to Bordeaux!
Bordeaux, with a population of just over half a million inhabitants, is located in the South West of France in the Aquitaine region. It is considered to be the most important port in the whole of Europe.

A place to relax
It is perhaps better known, however, for its neoclassical architecture and spacious town centre, complete with wide avenues and well looked after parks. Bordeaux has preserved its 18th Century atmosphere, slightly livened up by the presence of 60,000 students from the local university.

Plenty to keep you busy
There are a wide variety of fantastic museums to keep you occupied. The city centre is located along the Garonne River, which can flow either way depending on the tide. The 18th Century Grand Theatre, surrounded by Corinthian-style columns, is the town’s most proud possession. Its beautifully decorated interior is complimented by perfect acoustics.

A French city with English tastes!
The town was founded in 3BC by the Romans. Between 1154 and 1453 the English took charge and helped to develop the city’s wine industry based on their own tastes. Bordeaux now has an international reputation for producing fine wines. The most popular is the red wine, Claret. Spirits are also distilled here. The city has learned to adapt to the market, however, as now the economy is mainly based on high tech industries such as aeronautics. Bordeaux has recently received millions of euros for urban regeneration.

Catching waves
Outside of Bordeaux, there are plenty of things for you to do. Surfing is a popular hobby as Aquitaine’s Atlantic coast is considered to be the best surfing spot in Europe. The best (and also Europe’s biggest) beach is to be found around the Bassin d’Arcachon, a natural inland sea.

How do I get there?
The city has fantastic travel network, being as it is, a trading town. This has got even better with the creation of the TGV Rail Network linking the city to Paris. British Airways, flybe, easyJet and bmibaby all have regular flights into Bordeaux from the UK.

What are property prices like?
Despite the international popularity of the city, the centre is predominantly where the French live and work. Most British-buyers tend to go to the surrounding countryside to buy their houses. This has pushed up the prices of Bordeaux’s suburbs considerably.
