A place in history
Nontron is a small town in the north of the Dordogne brimming with history. It was founded by Phoenician explorers in 1100 BC and now has a population of just over 3,500. Throughout its interesting development it has survived a number of wars and sieges. In 1199 Richard the Lionheart met his end here.

Looking back
Today Nontron is a charming town, which has kept its traditional way of life. Its bustling market is the best place to meet fellow inhabitants and sample the local produce. If you want to delve into the region’s past then you have the choice of three castles. The Castle of Castelnaud is the oldest one. It was built in the 12th Century and is now a war museum. The castle of Marvel was constructed under the orders of the Viscounts of Limoges in the 13th Century and the Castle of Beauvais was built in the 15th Century.

Proud to be Green
The Dordogne is divided into four distinct areas, colourfully named after their characteristics. Nontron is the largest town in what is called Green Perigord, a vast area of lush valleys and trickling streams. It is here that you will also find the acclaimed Perigord-Limousin Regional National Park.

Pre-history
There are a number of great things to see in the town’s vicinity. The Cave of Villars contains a number of prehistoric paintings that must be seen. The people who painted them, however, probably weren’t around when the bar, shop and adventure playground were opened up around the caves. Another prehistoric site is the Rock of Cazelle where a number of tools and weapons used at the time are on display.

Finding peace
If you’ve come to the area because of its reputation for peaceful relaxation then the Hanging Gardens of Marqueyssac should defiantly be on your to-do list. They have been owned by the same family since 1692 and successive generations have continued to work on them. The gardens make a picturesque setting for a summer’s stroll.

How to get there
Ryanair will take you to Limoges direct from the UK while Air France British Airways and FlyBe will take you to Bordeaux. Angouleme can be reached only by changing in Paris or by the TGV service.

What about the property prices and availability?
The department in general has always been very popular with both the French and the international market. Nontron, however, is not located near the overcrowded and most in-demand area meaning that properties still represent real value for money. The area even has renovation properties still available.
