Le Fleix – a beautiful mediaeval village
Le Fleix is a beautiful mediaeval village that is located in the Dordogne department in south-west France. With its character and charm, almost completely unchanged from the time of its origins, Le Fleix is positively bursting with appeal for anyone seeking a corner of rural France that is truly traditional. With just a little over a thousand permanent inhabitants, Le Fleix cannot claim to be a metropolis, but it does lie in an idyllic spot, in picturesque countryside on a curve in the River Dordogne.

Mediaeval charm
The village is typically mediaeval, with many buildings with external timbers, houses with the upper storeys overhanging the lower, and narrow streets where you feel you can still hear the echoes of the original inhabitants if you stay still and listen for a moment. The River Dordogne, once the source of the town's wealth as an important port for trade in wood and wine, is now more of an adornment, but none the less delightful for that!

Le Fleix's castles
Le Fleix once had two castles, but sadly, the "Old Castle" was destroyed and little trace remains. The "New Castle", which was originally built in the 17th century for Frederic of Foix, was largely destroyed in the French Revolution. It was restored however, in the late 19th century, though only the part which was the Protestant church remains in its entirety today.

Downtown
Le Fleix has no pretensions to city life, and provides only fairly basic amenities, but these are very pleasant and include a useful little supermarket, a chemist, a couple of good bakers, a post office, a petrol station, a butcher and a hairdresser... almost any French village worth its salt has to have at least one hairdresser! There's a bar come restaurant too, which serves simple but excellent fare... as you come to expect in rural France.

Further afield
If you want to get out and about... and its a fair bet you will, as there is so much to discover in this area, then you could head for a lovely bastide town called St Foy Le Grande, where you can find a super Saturday market, a good range of shops and supermarkets, restaurants and other leisure and cultural activities. Of course, the Dordogne has many more places of interest for you to discover, and you will certainly want to take time to do this. The city of Bergerac is a great place to see, full of life and colour, and set in lovely countryside too. You will want to return again and again.

Sports anyone?
Whether you are on holiday or settling into French life, many people will want to take part in some sort of sporting activity, and rest assured, the French are a nation of sportsmen so there will be no shortage of sporting facilities on offer wherever you are. Le Fleix, set as it is in the beautiful landscapes of the Dordogne, has opportunities for fishing, swimming, canoeing, and also for walking, horse-riding and many more.

How to get there
Bergerac airport is served by Ryanair and flybe, and is usefully close to Le Fleix. Also accessible is Bordeaux which is served by British Airways, flybe, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet. TGVs run to Libourne and Angoulême which, although they are not quite on the doorstep for Le Fleix, are near enough to make train travel a real possibility. Local trains will take you on to towns nearer Le Fleix, such as Gardonne. Drivers can access Le Fleix on the D20 or D32, not too far from the A89.

Property prices and availability in and around Le Fleix
The Dordogne is popular, and prices have been pushed up in certain areas due to high demand. Expect property in and close to Le Fleix to move fast, as character villages such as this are highly prized.
