Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil - village in the Valley of the Fairies
Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil may have a slightly indigestible name, but it is a lovely and interesting village that lies in enchanting countryside in the Black Perigord region of the Dordogne in south-west France. The valley in which the village is found is known to many as the Valley of the Fairies, and this aptly sums up the magic of the village and its surroundings, with its ancient streets and houses backed by picturesque views of thickly wooded hillsides and beautiful rivers.

Centre for pre-history!
Take one small, unassuming village in the south-west of France, and then add the discovery of a world shaking archaeological find. This is what happened to Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil, when five skeletons of the earliest form of Homo sapiens were discovered in the rock beside the village. Thought to date back some 35,000 years, this is a truly amazing site to visit. Suddenly, the little village became a world renowned centre of pre-history and a celebrated Unesco World Heritage site!

Basic shops and services... great restaurants
Despite its long name, Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil is only a small village, and therefore you should not expect a metropolis-like array of shops and entertainment to be laid on. There are plenty of nearby larger towns and cities where you can find supermarkets, big schools and hospitals. Les Eyzies does, however, offer a basic range of shops and services, and, perhaps more importantly, has several excellent restaurants where you can sample the rich cuisine that makes the Black Perigord one of the most famous gastronomic regions in France.

Stunning countryside
The Perigord Noir, to give it its title in French, is said to be one of the most scenic regions in the country, and there are few who have visited who would disagree. It is a haven for lovers of the great outdoors, and there is a huge variety of sporting activities in which to take part, in and near the village. The rich diversity of the countryside is perfect for walking, cycling and horse-riding, and there are golf courses and tennis courts as well as rivers and lakes for fishing, canoeing and swimming.

Places to visit
Days out to explore do require a car in order to see the best of the region, as there are numerous fascinating and historical towns to visit. The bastide town of Sarlat la Canèda is one of these, which is said to be one of the most beautiful towns in France. Both Bergerac and Bordeaux are within easy reach too, so wine lovers will be in paradise!

How to get there
Flying offers the options of landing in Bergerac or Limoges, which are both served by Ryanair and flybe. The new airport at Brive la Gaillard may also be useful, when it opens for business. Rail travel is another possibility as the TGV runs to Libourne or Limoges. If you are driving you will find the village of Les Eyzies by the intersection of the D47 and D706 roads. The nearest major roads are the A89 and A20.

Prices in Les Eyzies are not particularly low, but perhaps lower than you might expect given the fame of the village and the desirability of the area. There are still some very interesting renovation properties on the market at the time of writing, but you can expect these to be snapped up very quickly.
