Pomport - among the vineyards of Bergerac
The old gated village of Pomport lies amidst the vineyards of the Bergerac wine region, on the old pilgrim trail to Santiago de Compostela. Pomport, often coupled with the neighbouring town of Sigoulès, is historic and peaceful, and offers great access to the major tourist attractions of this lovely area known as the Purple Perigord.
|
All about wine
Pomport offers basic village shops and amenities as well as a village bar and several good restaurants in the vicinity. The heart of the village is wine, and Pomport is not about to let you forget this, as everywhere you go in the locality you will find wine caves and vineyards, wine merchants and exhibitions. The Bergerac region is renowned for its excellent wines, and the name given to the region is the Purple Perigord, a direct reference to the purple grapes grown here in such profusion. The nearby town of Sigoulès offers further amenities with a selection of shops and even a pizzeria!
|
Relax at the lake
The lake that lies beside Pomport provides more than just a scenic beauty, it is a superb natural sports and leisure complex. There is something to suit all ages and tastes here, with safe swimming, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, slides for the kids and superb sandy man-made beaches for sunbathing in style! Pomport Lake also has a café where you can enjoy a delicious meal and a coffee or a glass of wine. Perfect for those long hot summer days that the Dordogne usually enjoys from May right through until October.
|
Gourmet treats
The region is proud of its rich gastronomy, and Pomport is well situated for enjoying this to the full, with a good complement of restaurants nearby. Local specialities to taste include a myriad of duck dishes, with nuts, mushrooms and truffles being especially prominent. If you prefer to prepare your own gourmet treats from fresh ingredients, the best place to go is the traditional street market that takes place at Pomport's sister village of Sigoulès.
|
Out and about
Visit Bergerac, of course, as this lovely town is well worth a day or two of your time… in fact, there is such a wonderful atmosphere here as well as the excellent amenities that you will probably want to return again and again. The beautiful town of Sarlat la Canéda is also close to the village, as are many wine estates that offer educational days and tastings.
|
Sports on offer
Sports fans will also find plenty to keep them happy in this area, with access to some of the most beautiful countryside in France. The pastimes of walking, cycling and horse-riding are recommended. The leisure lake offers lots of other possibilities of course, and nearby you will also find tennis courts and golf courses.
|
How to get there
Pomport is easily accessed from the UK, as there are airports at nearby Bergerac and also at Bordeaux. Bergerac is served by flybe and Ryanair, while Bordeaux is served by British Airways, bmibaby, Aer Lingus, easyJet and flybe. If you prefer the train, the TGV runs to Libourne, or you can take a local train to Bergerac. Travelling by road is simple, as you can find the D17 easily from the main N21 road.

Property prices and availability in and around Pomport
The Dordogne is a very popular area for property purchase, particularly with the British market. This means that prices can be on the high side, especially in the better known towns and villages. Prices in Pomport are actually not as high as you might expect, given the location close to Bergerac, and it is currently possible to purchase a very good four-bedroom property for under 250,000 Euros.
