Saint Méard de Gurcon – a pretty hillside village
The little village of Saint Méard de Gurcon is found sitting prettily on a hillside in the Dordogne department in south-west France. Having less then a thousand inhabitants, the village is not large, and this helps to retain its unspoiled quality, its air of rural peace and its sense of its own place in history. Saint Méard is surrounded by the carefully manicured vineyards that bring prosperity and acclaim to the region, and produce the Bergerac AOC and AOC Montravel wines.
|
Historical corners
Like many villages in south-west France, Saint Méard de Gurcon has its secrets and its quiet corners where you can discover a little bit of history. Here, you can find an old wash house, a windmill, a standing stone, an old fortress and a Gothic church with a 12th century belfry. Be aware though that the stone, windmill and fortress stand on private property, so don't go viewing them without permission.

Good amenities
For a small village Saint Méard has some excellent amenities. There is a pharmacy, a good range of local shops such as boulangeries, boucheries, epiceries etc, health care, a school, a notaire, and various other services that combine to make life in the village easy and pleasant. There are even restaurants, where you are able to relax and treat yourself to a taste of the south-west gastronomy that is so justly famous, revolving around the riches of the land with duck, goose and truffles proliferating on the menus, backed up by some of the most delicious and prestigious wines in France.
|
Pond life?
Saint Méard could perhaps be described as a village of watery delights, as not only does it have a total of no less than five rivers or streams flowing through it, but there is also a series of pretty ponds where you can fish for trout, but you need to ask at the Mairie or local tourist office about a permit and open times. Other activities available in Saint Méard include football training for the kids, a pony club and riding school and tennis courts.

Further afield
If you want to discover more of the lovely Purple Perigord, which is the local name for the area, you could do worse than begin with the beautiful bastide town called St Foy le Grande, where you can find a super Saturday market, a good range of shops and supermarkets, restaurants and other leisure and cultural activities. The city of Bergerac is also really worth a day or so of your time, with its cosmopolitan attitude and vitality.
|
How to get there
Bergerac airport is served by Ryanair and flybe, and is handy for Saint Méard. Also accessible is Bordeaux, which is served by British Airways, flybe, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet. TGVs run to Libourne (also not far away), and drivers can find Saint Méard at the intersection of the D708 and D32, close to the A89.

Property prices and availability in and around Saint Méard de Gurcon
The Dordogne is always popular, unsurprisingly, and prices have been pushed up in recent years due to high demand, especially from overseas buyers such as British, Germans and Dutch. Property types vary, with some exciting restoration projects still available.
