Villefranche du Périgord – a Perigordian bastide
The little village of Villefranche du Périgord is located in the Dordogne department in the region of Aquitaine, in France's wonderful south-west. The area is beloved of many nationalities, not least among them the Brits, and one brief visit to a village such as Villefranche will illustrate exactly why! This traditional little bastide, built of ancient honey-coloured stones, sits in the prettiest of Perigordian countryside, surrounded by rivers, beautiful woodlands, fields and hills. Tranquil and unspoiled, it doesn't attract too many tourists, so manages to retain an air of serenity that much of this popular department has had to sacrifice.

Local shops and services
Villefranche du Périgord is small, but it has a handful of useful shops and services that make life easy and pleasant for residents and guests. Of course, when you want a full range of city style amenities you will have to jump into your car and drive, but it's good to know that the basics are on hand for those days when you just want to chill out and enjoy the peace. Villefranche offers the services of a bank (which has a cash machine), a doctor, a bakery (essential!), a butcher, a small general supermarket and a post office. The village also has a selection of café bars where you can settle down with a coffee or a glass of the excellent local wine and watch the world go by. Its weekly market is held on Saturdays.

Pretty and mediaeval
Villefranche has some beautiful 12th and 13th century mediaeval buildings which are worth a look, including a covered market and various churches. You may also like to visit the town's museum.

Out and about
The climate is usually excellent in the Dordogne, so there should be plenty of sunshine to tempt you to get out and about. Places worth visiting include the larger bastide town of Monpazier (said to be one of the best preserved bastides in France), the wine town of Bergerac and the celebrated beauty of the town of Sarlat la Canéda.

Sporting and leisure activities on offer
Sporting and leisure activities available in the area close to the village include canoeing, horse-riding, tennis, swimming, walking, cycling and, for the less energetically inclined, wine tasting! The region also has many excellent and indeed, nationally renowned restaurants, so enjoy the rich and delicious cuisine of the Perigord with its truffles, walnuts, cèpes (a tasty variety of mushroom) and duck dishes. Don't miss the annual Cèpe and Chestnut Fair, for which Villefranche is famous.

How to get there
Fly to Bordeaux, Bergerac or Toulouse with a good choice of airline and departure points from around the UK. Bordeaux is served by British Airways, bmibaby, Aer Lingus, easyJet and flybe; Bergerac by flybe and Ryanair; and Toulouse by British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe. Train travel is another good choice, with TGV links from Paris to Bordeaux and Toulouse. You can then connect to a local train to Villefranche du Périgord itself. Drivers note that the village lies on the D660, the nearest auto route being the A20.

Property prices and availability in and around Villefranche du Périgord
The Dordogne property market has been pretty hot for some years now, with British buyers vying with other nationalities to purchase property and put down roots in this most desirable of departments. Prices in popular towns can be high, but fortunately not all towns and villages have been discovered yet, and Villefranche du Périgord is one of these. Prices are mid level, and there are still occasional chances to snap up a property bargain. Of course, if you are looking at the high end of the market , then you will have no problems finding luxury property in or near this lovely village.
