Landes Property Guide

For buying and selling property in Landes

Welcome to Landes

The Landes is a triangular department in the southwest of France. It has an average yearly temperature of 53 F. The spring is usually characterised by rain while the summer is warm with the occasional storm. Running parallel to the coastline there are dunes, with a number of large lakes beside them in the north. The south of the department is largely hilly and around half of Landes is covered in forest.

Plenty to do

The development of the Landes department has been slow and the area has been able to preserve a great deal of its natural heritage. The Landes Atlantic coastline is known as the silver coast and is not the gentlest beach you’ll come across in France. After navigating the largest dunes in the whole of Europe you will witness the largest waves the continent has to offer as well. It’s no wonder that surfers from all over the world flock here every year. The Landes is also ideal for a range of outdoor activities. Good use is made of the lakes - water sports are very popular. The area is also great for hiking and cycling.

Into the capital

The capital of the department is Mont-de-Marsan. This historical town is located at the confluence of the Midou and Douze. It has been a centre of trade throughout its history. Mont-de-Marsan has an impressive 14th Century keep with grand gardens, which is now used by the French military.

Onto the coast

Capbreton is an attractive seaside resort located in the south of the department. It also has an active fishing port and a promenade built by Napoleon III. The town is surrounded by pine forests. Nearby you’ll come across Hossegor, another resort, which has generated a great deal of interest by way of the many artists, writers and architects who came here in the 19th Century. Every year the World Surf Championship bases part of its contest here.

How to get there

British Airways, flybe bmibaby and easyJet all fly to Bordeaux from most UK airports, while Ryanair flies to Pau and Biarritz from Stansted. The TGV trains take under 3 and half hours to travel from Paris to Bordeaux. It is also possible to take the service to Biarritz as well. Another option would be to take a ferry into Bilbao, in Northern Spain and travel up from there.

What about Landes property prices and availability?

From Arcachon to Biarritz, straight down the coastline, you will come across the most expensive properties. Inland, you’ll find cheaper properties, as well as many needing renovation. Towards the very east of the department, prices start to rise again as it is ideally situated between Bordeaux and Toulouse.
