Hagetmau – in the middle of a beech forest...
The town of Hagetmau lies in the south-west of France, in the Landes department of Aquitaine, close to the Pyrénéan Mountains and the Basque coast. The name of Hagetmau means, literally translated from the original Gascon tongue, "in the middle of a beech forest", and it is from this proliferation of naturally available wood that the chief industry of the town, the construction of fine wooden furniture, sprung. Much of the Landes department is forested, with a variety of trees but including much pine.

All shops and services
Hagetmau is a lively, middle sized town, well equipped and well placed for easy access from the UK. Hagetmau offers all the usual shops and services associated with a town of its size, and in addition, is close enough to major towns such as Pau to be able to utilise the extra facilities that a large town or city can provide as well.

Attractive town in good location
The town is attractively placed, being set on a high point of land with excellent views, and is located in a handy part of the region for accessing not only airports for flights to and from the UK, but also for visiting the surf resorts of Biarritz and the Basque coast, and for trips across the border into Spain, where there is some excellent and very cheap shopping to be had in the border town of Irun.

Dining out
There are a good number of restaurants in Hagetmau, as you might expect in a region that regards its gastronomy as of paramount importance to its identity. The local specialities include duck, in all its possible guises, as well as Foie Gras, delicious almond pastries and Armagnac.

Bloodless bullfights
If you are seeking an unusual form of entertainment you can find it in this area, as the special kind of (humane) bullfighting known as "Cours Landaise" takes place in many towns close to Hagetmau. In this genre of the sport, unlike that practiced so controversially in Spain, the bulls live to fight another day and it is the unarmed men who are most at risk.

Other activities available
Of course, there are many other activities open to you in the vicinity of Hagetmau, and these include horse-riding, golf, walking and cycling.

Out and about
Hagetmau, being situated in the rural and sparsely populated department of the Landes, is an ideal base for anyone who loves the countryside and wild seascapes of the south-west of France. The beaches, famed far and wide for their surf and social life for the young and trendy, are within a very reasonable drive, and there are many lovely beauty spots and fascinating towns to visit too, such as the well known town of Mont de Marsan, close to Hagetmau. It is also perfectly possible to pop across the border to the Spanish town of Irun, which offers a great opportunity to experience the peculiarly buzzy atmosphere of a Spanish border town, and to pick up some bargains too.

How to get there
You can fly to Pau, Biarritz or to Bordeaux, Pau being the nearest. Both Pau and Biarritz are served by Ryanair, while Bordeaux is served by British Airways, Aer Lingus, easyJet, and bmibaby. Rail travel is another possibility, as the super fast TGV runs to Bayonne, Bordeaux, Biarritz and Toulouse, from where you can catch linking trains to Mont de Marsan, which is the closest town to Hagetmau with a railway station. Hagetmau is then a short drive away. If you are driving, you will find the town from the A63 and A64 auto routes (depending on direction of travel).

Property prices and availability in and around Hagetmau
Property in the Landes is usually quite reasonably priced, as long as you keep away from the coast where the prices rise steeply as always. Hagetmau represents a good opportunity to purchase property in south-west France while prices are still uninflated by over popularity.

Interesting fact: The wooden furniture industry that is so important to Hagetmau is symbolised by a replica of a giant wooden chair, which can be seen from the town's bypass. A French "Angel of the North", perhaps?
