Villeneuve de Marsan - in the heart of Armagnac country
The historic bastide town of Villeneuve de Marsan is found in the south-west of France, a short way inland from the surf beaches of the Silver Coast. In the lovely Landes countryside, characterised by ancient bastide towns and pine forests, Villeneuve de Marsan is set right in the heart of Armagnac country, and invites its visitors to discover this special drink, the pride and joy of the Landes.

Historic features
Villeneuve de Marsan is a bastide town, built to a pattern to ensure maximum ability to repel invaders. It is interesting to walk the grid of streets that fan out from the central square, and this is the best way to discover the many historic features of this old town. The Church of St Hippolyte is one such building that should be seen, as is the old wash house, or "lavoir", the imposing old stone tower, and the unusual grass amphitheatre.

Shopping and dining
The little town offers a number of shops and services, and has a weekly market on Wednesdays. It is also well placed for accessing the larger facilities of the popular beauty spot and tourist town of Mont de Marsan, which lies almost next door. Villeneuve de Marsan is also a paradise for gourmets, as not only is it set in Armagnac country, ensuring that there will always be opportunities to take a glass or two of this prestigious tipple, but the town boasts a number of excellent restaurants, including two which have achieved no less an accolade than a Michelin star.

Out and about
The Landes is a rural department, but don't make the mistake of thinking that there will be little to do here to occupy yourself. The town has plenty of sporting clubs and facilities, and within easy reach of Villeneuve de Marsan you can find great golf courses, horse-riding stables, cycle hire, tennis courts, swimming pools and reputedly some of the best fishing in the country. Remember too, the beaches of the Silver Coast with their wild waves (popular with the surfing crowd) and remarkable sand dunes are very nearby, as are the ski resorts of the Pyrénées. Even Basque Spain is readily accessible from this area.
|
How to get there
You can fly to Pau, Biarritz or to Bordeaux. These airports are served variously by British Airways, Aer Lingus, easyJet, flybe, bmibaby and Ryanair. Rail travel is another good way to travel, as the super efficient TGV service runs to Bayonne, Bordeaux, Biarritz and Toulouse. And if driving, the town can be found on the D934/D11, the nearest major roads being the A62, A63 and A64.

Property prices and availability in and around Villeneuve de Marsan
The Landes tends to offer very reasonably priced property, and in the countryside it is still possible to find some exciting renovation projects. Look out especially for the characteristic Landaise style farms and old "colombage" properties, with external timbers adding bags of character and desirability.
