Castillonnès – a pretty bastide town

Castillonnès is a pretty bastide town in an area rich in such traditionally designed towns. It is found in the Lot-et-Garonne department of Aquitaine, in south-west France, and perches assertively on a rocky hill overlooking the lush green valley of the River Dropt. Surrounded by such scenery, and benefiting from its own charms as a traditional bastide, Castillonnès is delightful place to visit or to live.

A new castle for an old castle...

The name of Castillonnès means "new castle", and the town is aptly named as it is built on the site of a ruined castle, high on a rocky hilltop. The town was constructed as a bastide, just before the start of the Hundred Years War, and conforms to the usual pattern of an arcaded central square, a fortified church, and a grid like pattern of streets radiating out from the centre. It is still possible to find some of the remains of the old fortified parts of town, such as the Valets fortified gate, and you will see too that many of the houses have external timbers, creating a most appealing and authentic ambience.
