Fumel – a town amidst the fruit orchards
The lively old town of Fumel, that is located in south-western France in the Lot et Garonne department, is set amidst a gorgeous landscape of fruit orchards and the wide, sparkling expanse of the Lot River. In spring and early summer the landscape is awash with pastel shades of blossoms, and in late summer and autumn, the trees droop, heavy with fruit. Amongst all this is Fumel, an old town with a modern approach to life.

Plenty to do
Unlike many old rural towns in this part of France, Fumel is well equipped to cater for those who like plenty to occupy them. The town's shopping, entertainment and social facilities even get a thumbs up from its teenage residents, who say that there is always something for them to do! The town has a good commercial centre, and there are a great selection of bars and restaurants, a cinema and even regular discos.
Fumel also offers all the necessary amenities, with banks, doctors, dentists, pharmacies and other facilities.

And a castle too...
Fumel is noted for its castle, which is still worth seeing even though it was badly damaged during the Hundred Years War. The castle, which lies in beautifully set out gardens, now houses the town's Mairie... so a trip to see the Maire is rather more luxurious here than in many towns!

Out and about
Fumel lies just below the popular and beautiful Perigord region, so it makes a good base for exploring. The area is rich in chateaux, rivers, wildlife and pretty villages as well as history, and it will be a long time before you can say you have seen everything! Sports fans will find that there is plenty for them too, with swimming pools, tennis, golf, horse-riding and cycling all close to hand.

How to get there
There are plenty of easy ways to reach Fumel from the UK. Flying offers the options of landing in Bergerac, Bordeaux or Toulouse, with a good choice of departure points and airlines. Bergerac is served by flybe and Ryanair; Toulouse by bmi, British Airways, easyJet, flybe, bmi and Jet2; and Bordeaux by British Airways, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet. Rail travel is also possible as there is a railway station at nearby Villeneuve sur Lot, and the TGV will take you as far as Agen. If you are driving (and this is always a good idea as it affords you the ability to get out and about to explore the wider areas), the excellent A20 auto route is the one to follow. It takes around ten hours to drive from Calais, which sounds a long time but the journey is so interesting you won't mind! France changes a lot as you travel through the different regions, and that alone makes the drive worthwhile.

Property prices and availability in and around Fumel
Its position, being set just below the Dordogne, means that the high prices found in that department are less likely to blight the property market in Fumel. The department is popular, though, and its great location between Toulouse and Bordeaux means that property here will never be cheap. If you are seeking a country style property, the French dream of a lovely old stone farmhouse, a pretty water mill to renovate or a country home with lovely views over open countryside, Fumel could be the place to look, as there are many super properties of this type on the market just outside the town.
