The intriguingly named village of Sos is found amid the lovely rural landscapes of the south-western Lot et Garonne department in south-west France. Sos is mediaeval in origin, and it shows, with a beautiful arcaded central square, overlooked by half-timbered houses and leading off through a network of atmospheric streets. Sos is a pretty peaceful place, offering all necessary amenities. It is also close to many of the best attractions of this sunny region, being easily accessed from both Toulouse and Bordeaux.
The village is hardly large, having some 600 or so permanent residents, but it is well equipped to handle your everyday needs, and some more besides! There are plenty of shops, with all the usual French necessities of a boulangerie, boucherie, tabac, post office, pharmacy, grocer's and more. Supermarkets and larger shops can be found in the nearby larger towns. For those who enjoy dining out (and who could not enjoy this, especially in the south-west of France where the gastronomy is famous for its rich delicacies such as duck confits, prunes, cassoulet and foie gras), the village offers a choice of two good, friendly restaurants.
Sos is noted for its summer night markets, and if you haven't attended one of these events before you are in for a real treat. Local producers and artisans bring their wares, music plays, wine is opened and food served, and a good time is had by all. It is one of the best possible ways to get a taste of rural French life, and maybe you will also pick up a bargain while you are there.
Lot et Garonne is a fortunate department, set as it is between Bordeaux and Toulouse, giving excellent road access to both these great cities. It isn't just the cities that you will want to explore, though, as close to Sos there are many historic and beautiful smaller towns, bastides, picturesque villages and beautiful unspoilt countryside too. Take a day to visit Agen, famed for its prunes, or Condom, actually not famed for its… (although there is a condom museum there).
If you want a taste of salt air, head west to the Atlantic coast where you can find massive sand dunes and even bigger surf waves as well as lively resorts and a unique way of life. Travelling south-west brings you to the Landes, and here the "must see" town is that of Mont St Michel.
You can fly to Bordeaux, Bergerac, Toulouse or Pau. Bordeaux is currently served by Air France, British Airways, easyJet, Flybe and bmibaby; Bergerac by Flybe and Ryanair; Toulouse by Air France, British Airways, easyJet, Flybe and Jet2; and Pau by Ryanair. If you are driving, the town lies on the D656. The motorway that runs from Toulouse to Bordeaux, the A62, also passes near Sos.
The Lot et Garonne is not really a cheap department, as its location has always meant it is a desirable place to live or to holiday. However, keeping away from the larger and better known towns brings an opportunity to find cheaper property, and Sos is a case in point.
