Villeneuve sur Lot – a bastide town on the River Lot
The town of Villeneuve sur Lot is located in south-west France, in the department of Lot-et-Garonne. It lies right on the River Lot, near the departmental capital of Agen. In fact, the town is cut into two unequal parts by the flow of the river, the two sections being linked by a very impressive arched stone bridge. The town was originally built as a bastide, one of the distinctive grid patterned towns that so characterise this area of France, and although much of the original town remains, a whole lot more of Villeneuve sur Lot has sprung up around it! Don't jump to the conclusion that this is necessarily a bad thing, however, as actually it results in a feeling of a town very much in touch with reality rather than a town that has been falsely preserved as a tourist trap.
