Mellionnec is a peaceful, pretty village that is found in the lovely countryside of rural Brittany, in the department of the Côtes d'Armor. With only 440 inhabitants, the village manages to retain a real sense of community, and is typically Breton in appearance and outlook.
Small it may be, but Mellionnec is a village with a heart. Many rural villages do not have much in the way of facilities, but in Mellionnec you can find a village shop for general groceries and other goods, a boulangerie that sells delicious breads, and a bar and a crèperie restaurant too... quite a lot for a tiny community!
Mellionnec is one of eleven European villages that have declared themselves "Cultural Villages of Europe", dedicated to preserving tradition, local culture and offering old style hospitality to those who want to discover what all this means. This ensures that not only will you be able to get a real sense of the history and traditions of the village, but that you will also receive a warm Breton welcome when you visit.
Of course, a little local shop is great for odds and ends, or for those days when you don't want to get the car out and drive, but you will need to have access to larger shops and supermarkets sometimes. All these (and all the usual services and amenities such as schools, health care, garages, banks and other necessities) can be found just a short distance away in the town of Rostrenen.
Rural Brittany is one of the best places on earth for lovers of nature and gentle outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling and pony trekking. The area around the village has beautiful woodland trails, lakes for swimming and fishing, and miles of unspoiled countryside to be enjoyed.
There are airports at Dinard, Lorient, Brest and Rennes. Dinard is served by Ryanair or Aurigny Air; Lorient by Aer Arann; Brest by flybe and Ryanair; and Rennes by flybe and Aer Lingus. Those who prefer to travel by boat will find Roscoff and St Malo to be the nearest ferry ports. Drivers will find Mellionnec on the D23 after travelling on the N164.
Generally speaking, the Côtes d'Armor can prove to be a fairly expensive place to purchase property, but villages such as Mellionnec tend to offer better value for money as they are situated inland and are not as well known to the mass market.
