For buying and selling property in Paule
The pretty little village of Paule, in the Côtes d'Armor department of north-west France, lies in unspoiled countryside on the Nantes Brest Canal. Although the village is not on the coast, it makes a wonderful base for a holiday or protracted stay in the region, as it offers a charming, tranquil retreat, yet access to the beaches, attractions and ferry ports is excellent.
Paule is little more than a speck on the map, with not much over 600 inhabitants, yet the village is surprisingly well equipped with the things that make life easy and pleasant. Here you can find a church, a school, a bar-tabac, a general store and boulangerie, a garage and even a restaurant. Many towns of more than four times its size cannot boast as much!
Perhaps this is what makes Paule such a popular place, for although it is indeed peaceful and unspoiled, it is also a place to which holidaymakers return again and again, sometimes returning to purchase property so that they can have a permanent home in this village.
One of the great aspects of the Côtes d'Armor is its ease of access to all of the region's favourite attractions and locations. It doesn't matter where you are in the department, the sea is never far away, and there are plenty of great beaches and seaside resorts to choose from within easy reach of Paule. The area abounds in historical towns too, Dinan being one of the most charming, with its mediaeval streets and period houses.
Staying right at home is another option, though, as Paule has the advantage of being set on the Nantes Brest Canal, which actually runs right through the village. There is a canoe school where you can learn the expert way to handle these little craft, or just enjoy a leisurely walk along the shady towpath, taking in the scenery and watching the boats as you go. Other sports available in the area include horse-riding, tennis, golf and fishing.
To travel by air to Paule you can fly to Dinard or Brest direct from the UK. Dinard is served by Aurigny and Ryanair and Brest by Flybe and Ryanair. If you prefer the ferry, the ports of Roscoff and St Malo are served by the excellent Brittany Ferries, while the other northern ferry ports are all within an easy drive of Paule. Drivers will find the village easily from the N164.
Although the Côtes d'Armor is one of Brittany's more popular and hence more expensive departments, inland villages such as Paule can offer some surprisingly reasonably priced property, so it's well worth a look if this is the region on which you have set your heart.
