Saint Mayeux - an authentic Breton village
The little village of St Mayeux, found in the inland part of the Côtes d'Armor department of Brittany, is peaceful, charming and authentically Breton in every way. The village is ideally placed for getting to know the more undiscovered parts of the region, but has the advantage of being only 40 minutes drive from the coast and the lively resort towns found there.
|
Good village amenities
St Mayeux is not a big town by any means, but it has plenty of the essential amenities which all help to make life in the village easy and pleasant. You can find small shops (including the obligatory "boulangerie"), bars, restaurants and all the necessary services. Supermarket shopping can be done at the larger town of Pontivy, some fifteen minutes away.
|
Standing stones
The village has a lovely and interesting church, much of which is said to have been built from the original building of the Abbaye de Bon Repas. The most intriguing feature of the village, though, is undoubtedly its menhirs, or standing stones, which are a particular phenomena of this region of France. Of mysterious but definitely ancient origin, the standing stones of St Mayeux should certainly be on your list of things to see!

Lake Guerledan
One of the best places to visit close to St Mayeux is the fabulous large lake of Guerledan. One of the best leisure lakes in Brittany, Lake Guerledan offers superb fishing, swimming, sailing and boat tours. If you prefer land based activities you won't be disappointed, as the area has golf courses, horse-riding stables, cycle hire and wonderful walking trails.

Out and about
There are many lovely towns and villages to visit in the region too, and the nearby "little city of character", Mur de Bretagne is quite delightful. Make time too, to visit the mediaeval marvel that is the town of Dinan, with its ancient fortifications, narrow cobbled streets and a host of charming shops and restaurants. Of course, the Breton coast is within easy reach too, and from the lively town of St Brieuc to the pretty beaches of northern Brittany you are bound to find something to please you here.
|
How to get there
You can take direct flights from the UK to Dinard, Brest or Lorient. Dinard is served by Aurigny and Ryanair, Brest by flybe and Ryanair, and Lorient by Aer Arann. Rail travel will take you to St Brieuc, and the ferry ports of St Malo, Roscoff and Brest are all accessible. If you are driving, you will find St Mayeux from the D767 and N164.
