Carhaix Plouguer - unspoiled and proud
The region of Brittany is known to have a strong sense of regional identity, and a great pride in its traditions and history. If ever there was a town that embodies this spirit and pride, it is the town of Carhaix Plouguer, a market town located in the east of the Finistère department.
Carhaix Plouguer is in a good position
Carhaix is a good sized town and lies in inland Finistère, close to the departments of Morbihan and Côtes d'Armor. This makes it an ideal base for enjoying this wonderful region of France, and as Carhaix has a cultural and Breton language centre, this also makes it an ideal place to begin to gain an insight into everything Breton.
Weekly market
Like many towns in France, Carhaix is a market town, and this only adds to its attractions. Carhaix has a weekly market, held every Saturday morning. This is a must for all Francophiles, as the sights, sounds and above all, scents of a traditional market are unsurpassed as a French experience par excellence! The market is far from being the only shopping outlet in Carhaix, however.
Superb array of shops in Carhaix Plouguer
The town has a superb array of shops, and perhaps unusually for a town of its size, has managed to acquire not only a large le Clerc supermarket, but also useful large stores such as Decathlon, M. Bricolage and others. Everything you need is on hand here, whether you are on holiday or renovating a house for permanent living.
The cuisine of Brittany
Carhaix Plouguer has a good choice of restaurants and bars for your entertainment and pleasure. Brittany is known for its delicious cuisine, and especially for its seafood, so its good to know that you have plenty of opportunities to sit back and let someone else prepare these treats for you in time honoured Breton fashion. Although Carhaix doesn't lie on the coast, it is worth remembering that nowhere in Brittany is far from the sea, so the seafood in Carhaix is as fresh as that in the port towns.
Culture and traditions
Carhaix is noted for its pride in its culture, patrimony and traditions. There are numerous festivals and events throughout the calendar that celebrate these and give you a chance to learn more about Breton culture than you will ever learn from books, and in a most pleasurable fashion. The biggest of these events is the annual music festival, the Vieilles Charrues, that is one of the largest in Europe, and which attracts many top names to the town.
Sports and leisure
Take any town in Brittany and you will find an embarrassment of sports and leisure opportunities. Carhaix is no exception. You will find chances to try many sports here including horse-riding, golf, water sports, cycling, walking, tennis, petanque and many more.
How to get there
To reach Carhaix Plouguer from the UK you can fly to Dinard (Ryanair, Aurigny) or to Brest (Ryanair, flybe), or travel by ferry to St Malo or Roscoff. If driving, you will reach the town from the N164.
Property prices and availability in and around Carhaix Plouguer
Finistère is generally found to have lower priced properties than the other Breton departments, and it is also a fact that inland towns tend to be cheaper than those on the coast, so property in and around Carhaix could prove to be a bargain. The market currently shows a good range of property types, with everything from tiny town houses to luxury residences and business propositions available at the time of writing.
