A tale of three rivers...
The town of Quimperlé, in southern Brittany in France's lovely north-west, is a town which lies on three rivers. The Rivers Elle, Argoat and Isole flow through or beside the town on their way to the sea, and they add a cool watery charm to Quimperlé and give it the popular name of “Little Venice”. The flower bedecked ancient bridges cross the river linking the newer parts of town with the historic quarter making Quimperlé nothing less than picture perfect.
|
Colombage charm
Quimperlé 's historic quarter is filled with pretty winding streets and the quaint half-timbered houses known as “maisons colombages”. Oozing mediaeval charm, the town attracts tourists in droves in the summer, which is good news for anyone investing in a business or in a property to let out here... business should be brisk!
Quimperlé is not a particularly large town, but it has its share of historic monuments, amongst which feature the Abbey of Saint Croix, the Church of Notre Dame de l'Assumption and the ruins of St Colomban. One of its prettiest features is the Pont Fleuri, the old bridge which is covered with beautiful floral displays in summer.

Things to do in Quimperlé
There is a general market in Quimperlé every Friday morning, and this is an excellent opportunity to see a real slice of local colour, as well as to avail yourself of the chance to buy the very best of local goods and produce. If you are a lover of fish and seafood, don't miss the daily fish market too... just follow your nose!

Festivals, concerts and fêtes
Like many French towns, Quimperlé has its fair share of festivals and fêtes, and the details of these can be obtained from the tourist office. There are musical concerts and festivals throughout August, and the major event of the Fête de la Laita is definitely worth attending.
|
Modern convenience
Quimperlé has plenty of interesting history but it has also carved out a place in modern society and offers a comfortable modern lifestyle for anyone wishing to live here. There are a great range of shops, and even four large mainstream supermarkets... a Leclerc, an Intermarché, an Aldi and a Lidl, making everyday life easy.

Quimperlé has all amenities on offer
The town has health care, schools, pharmacies and all the usual facilities and amenities. There is also a good selection of restaurants to choose from, with cuisines varying from crepes to gourmet food, and everything in between! Local specialities are always good, so try the crepes with whatever filling appeals most or treat yourself to fresh delicious seafood and wash it all down with a glass of Breton cider... but watch out, its strong stuff!
|
Out and about
The area is fantastic for anyone who enjoys being active, and lends itself to a variety of sporting pursuits. The seaside is ever near, so you can enjoy swimming, surfing, walking coastal trails and horse-riding on the sands. Or you can head inland and go cycling (a great way to discover all the pretty villages close to Quimperlé) or perhaps enjoy a game of tennis or even try your hand at the traditional game of boules.
|
How to get there
To reach Quimperlé by air you can take a flight to nearby Brest airport, choosing to fly with flybe or Ryanair. It is also near enough to the ferry ports to make ferry travel a possibility, and you can get to St Malo, which is the nearest port, with Brittany Ferries. Roscoff and Cherbourg are also within a reasonable travelling distance.
|
Property prices and availability in and around Quimperlé
Prices in and around the town are on the up, but still represent better value than in other parts of Brittany. Finistère is a little cheaper than, for example, the Côtes-d'Armor, but Quimperlé is in a desirable location in the south of Finistère, so snap up your bargain quickly before prices rise too high!
