Scaër - an unsung hero of Brittany
When you mention Brittany, most people conjure up images of cliffs and islands, of fishing harbours and seafood restaurants, of beaches and buckets and spades. Of course, Brittany has all this, and it remains the defining characteristic of the region, but there are some glorious "unsung heroes" to be found inland too, and Scaër is most certainly one of these. Set in the lushest of green countryside, and given the title of a "Station Verte" meaning that it is a protected natural environment, Scaër is a lively and bustling market town, and still only a twenty minute drive from the coast!

Weekly market
Scaër holds a weekly street market in the traditional fashion, and for all lovers of the buzz and excitement that overtakes a town on market days in France, this is a colourful "must not miss" event. Everything you could think of… and a lot more besides... is on offer, from fruit and veg to high fashion. There is an abundance of everyday shops too in Scaër, and also plenty of other useful services such as medical care, dentists, taxis, hairdressers, pharmacies and petrol stations. There's even a very sleek looking modern cultural centre... definitely worth a look!

Wining and dining in Scaër
Scaër has a good selection of restaurants, and you can find plenty of Breton specialities on the menu. Even though Scaër lies inland, you will still be able to choose the fabulous fresh seafood for which Brittany is so famed, as nowhere in Finistère is far from the sea, and the shellfish and other delicious "fruits de la mer" are brought fresh to the restaurants daily. Brittany is less known for its wines than for its ciders, perhaps, but there are still likely to be some good wines on the "carte". Then, for dessert, what could be nicer than a freshly cooked traditional Breton crêpe, with a sprinkling of lemon juice and sugar? Perfect.

La Cavalcade
Scaër's carnival "La Cavalcade" is worth a look. It is held every other year and is said to be the third largest in France, with around 30 floats and 2000 people participating in the event, which is held over two days.

Out and about
Scaër has some excellent sports and leisure facilities, and lots of opportunities to enjoy yourself and maybe even get fit in the fresh air and lovely green spaces that surround the town. In Scaër itself there are tennis courts and a great swimming pool with water slides (keep the kids happy!), whereas in the countryside you can walk, cycle or ride a horse to discover the cool dark forests, the lush green fields and the tree-lined lanes of this beautiful area. Or you can try your hand at fishing in one of the many rivers in the area, perhaps the Aven, the Ster Goz or the Isole.
|
How to get there
To reach Scaër from the UK you can fly to Dinard with Aurigny or Ryanair, or to Brest with Ryanair or flybe. Or you can travel by ferry to St Malo or Roscoff.

Property prices and availability in and around Scaër
Finistère usually has some excellent property bargains to be had, especially inland where prices will always be lower than in the coastal towns. Currently on the market are some attractive town houses, quaint country cottages and even a very large property suitable for use as a B&B, each priced at less than 200,000 Euros! That is definitely value for money.
