Guer - mediaeval charm
The small market town of Guer, which is located in the centre of Brittany in the north-east of the department of Morbihan, is full of mediaeval charm that more than makes up for it not being set on the coast. With many traditional half-timbered buildings, ancient streets and beautiful green spaces, this little town is a gem awaiting discovery.
|
Military significance
Guer is just a small town, but it is one which boasts great military significance in France, as it is the home of France's leading military academy, Ecole Speciale Militaire de St Cyr. This school was founded by the most famous French soldier of them all, one Monsieur Bonaparte, known to his friends as Napoleon! This academy is considered to be the French equivalent of Sandhurst, so expect to see some very smart uniforms around town.
|
A traditional market
Nobody does a market like the French, and the traditional market held every Wednesday in Guer is delightful, with its pretty setting and usual cornucopia of local produce, crafts and "bric a brac" on offer. Guer offers most shops and services as well as its market, so life is pleasantly relaxing as you can access most things on your doorstep. There are restaurants, bars and a swimming pool, so you won't be short of ways to spend your leisure time in town.

Out and about
If you want to explore the region a little further, and you most certainly should, there are plenty of great places within easy reach of Guer. Visit the regional capital of Vannes, or enjoy a day out at the coast with its lovely islands. Inland there are a good deal of pretty villages to discover too, and acres of gorgeous and mystical forest where you might just catch a glimpse of the ghost of King Arthur, or his magician Merlin!
|
How to get there
You can fly to the airports of Lorient, Rennes, Brest or Dinard. Lorient is served by Aer Arann; Rennes by Aer Lingus and flybe; Brest with flybe and Ryanair; and Dinard with Ryanair and Aurigny. If travelling by ferry, the port of St Malo is the nearest although all the northern ports are within a reasonable driving distance. The N24 is the road to take if you are driving, as it is close to Guer.

Property prices and availability in and around Guer
Morbihan is often said to be the most desirable of all the Breton departments, as it has an enviable Gulf Stream enhanced climate and is extremely pretty. It is fair to say that property here is generally more expensive than that in Finistère, but it is still possible to pick up a bargain, especially if you base your search inland, close to Guer.
