Amboise - on the banks of the Loire

Amboise is a large town that lies on the banks of the River Loire, in central France. With the city of Tours just to the west, Amboise has excellent travel links to the UK and indeed to all of France. The town has many interesting historical features, not least of which is its imposing chateau, and it is also famed as the one time home (and place of death) of Leonardo da Vinci.

Set in beautiful countryside

The countryside of the surrounding area is classically beautiful, with rolling fields, broad rivers, pretty woodlands and some of the most impressive chateaux in France.

An illustrious past

Amboise first came into existence in 504, and has gone from strength to strength ever since. It has a long history of royal connections, having been the chosen residence of many French monarchs. It was also home for some time to Leonardo da Vinci. Evidence of its importance can still be seen, with the imposing Château d'Amboise which dominates the town from above, the Clos Luce (the mansion which was the home of Leonardo da Vinci), a fabulous Chinese pagoda (Pagode de Chanteloup), and characteristic narrow, cobbled streets and old timbered houses.

Shopping, wining and dining

Amboise provides just about everything you could wish for in terms of modern necessities and pleasures, with excellent shopping, schools, health care, service industries and an extensive selection of bars and restaurants. Wining and dining in this region of France is always a delight, and there are many superb local wines to enjoy alongside the delicious cuisine of the Loire. Traditional markets are also held regularly in the town.

Exploring Amboise

There is much to see and do in and around Amboise, and visits to the Chateau, the da Vinci house and the Pagode de Chanteloup are always worth putting on the agenda. A walk around town will also offer the chance to see some lovely old buildings (many with external timbers), and a quirky turtle-shaped fountain with a teddy bear statue on the top. It will also offer you the chance to trace the history of France's postal service, which is detailed in the museum sited within the Hotel Joyeuse.

Out and about

Trips into the surrounding area can take you to the great city of Tours, capital of the department, to the vineyards and wine domains of the Loire valley, to the cool leafy trails of the Forest of Amboise and to the magnificent chateaux of the Loire, bringing history to life. Central France is classical France, with wide rolling landscapes and mighty rivers, genteel towns and a culture of gourmet food and great wine.

How to get there

The nearby city of Tours is one of the easiest places after Paris to access from the UK. Ryanair, the budget airline, has direct flights to Tours from Stansted. There is a TGV line into the city too, which makes rail travel quick and effective, as Amboise has its own railway station with links to Paris and Tours. Tours also lies on a crossroads of many major auto routes, with the A10 from Paris taking you directly there. After that, it is simple to reach Amboise, which is accessed from the A10 (or A85) via the D31.

Property prices and availability in and around Amboise

Property in and around Amboise can be expensive, as the town and its environs are highly sought after, not just by foreign property buyers but also by the French themselves, who love this region. The quality of property available, however, is first class, and if you are seeking something a little bit special, then this could be the very place to find it.
