A great historic city
The city of Bourges is set in the lovely heartlands of France, in what many consider to be the most beautiful part of the elegant Loire Valley, a region known for its vineyards and fabulous chateaux. Bourges is the capital city of the Cher department of central France, and is a great centre of art and history. It has many utterly different areas which are an endless source of fascination, and which mean that not only does everyone who comes to Bourges find something to delight them, but also that it is a city in which you will never be bored!

Art, history and shopping too!
Bourges is classified as a city of “art and history”, and there is certainly plenty of art, history and culture to be found. If your interests are less highbrow however, do not let this deter you, as Bourges is also one of France's most delightful shopping cities. Browse at will, the lovely little shops set in pretty cobbled streets and interspersed with pavement cafés, which positively invite you to sit and take a little break for coffee, “chocolat chaud”, cakes and pastries.

Bourges’s cathedral, museum and ruins
If you are in search of culture and education, however, there is no better place to begin than with the magnificent Gothic cathedral, St Etienne, which towers over the town. Built in the 12th century, the cathedral is classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. Take time too to visit the Maurice Esteve Museum and the ruins of the Gallo Roman walls around the city. And perhaps you may also like to visit the fascinating marshes of the Yèvre and Voiselle Rivers.

Peace and colour....
Proving once again the diversity of its glories, Bourges offers so much more than shopping and history. There are many places within the city where you can find peace and quiet, green spaces and the beauty of nature. Take a walk beside the Berry Canal, where the slow pace of life on the water will soothe even the most stressed out city dweller. If natural beauty and vibrant colour is what pleases your eye, the city's water gardens should do the trick nicely.
