Cher today
The Cher is situated right in the centre of France and is formed out of the ancient territories of Bourbonnais, Nivernais and Berry. The area formerly known as Berry has left the most significant cultural legacy in the Cher. You will undoubtedly be able to try some authentic Berry cuisine while you are here. This area is considered to be one the most attractive parts of the Loire Valley.

A captivating capital
The capital, Bourges, is distinguished by its remarkable 12th Century Gothic Cathedral that looms over the old town. Underneath, the cobbled streets are packed with historical buildings, fine museums and cosy cafés. The city is home to around 76,000 people.

Cher’s heritage
Originally a Gaulish town, Bourges became a part of Aquitania under the Romans and then later a home to the French Kings. The Cathedral St-Etienne, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, moved the writer, Henry James to pen, “The huge, rugged vessel of the church overhung me in very much the same way as the black hull of a ship at sea would overhang a solitary swimmer”.

A tale of four towns
Vierzon, in the west of the Cher, is actually made up of four towns. Together they form a unique trading crossroads on the confluence of the Yèvre and Cher Rivers. There is a canal, as well, which links the department with Montluçon in Auvergne. The canal is no longer used for industrial purposes but visitors can hire a boat for a leisurely cruise or take a pleasant stroll along its banks.

Tasting the local tipple
The town of Sancerre is known throughout the world for its production of fine white wines. The town's Tourist Information office will tell you all the places where you can buy, taste and learn more about the local speciality. Sancerre is a charming city with a number of great restaurants. If you are a real wine-enthusiast then you should visit Quincy as well, which produces an even more esteemed wine that is incredibly hard to get hold of even in France.

One of France’s most beautiful
Apremont-sur-Allier, situated in the east of the department along the Allier River is proudly listed as one of "les plus beaux villages de France", meaning "one of the most beautiful villages in France". It has a magnificent château complete with stunning gardens and houses that date from medieval times.

How to get there
The department is not that far from Paris making access from the UK fairly easy. There is also a closer airport in Tours with regular Ryanair flights.

What about the property prices and availability?
Property prices in Cher are above the national average and they are still rising along with those in the rest of the Loire Valley. There is a healthy rental market and hotels, gites and bed and breakfasts also appear on the market fairly regularly.
