A tranquil haven just two hours from Paris
Belying its nearness to the bustling capital of France, (it lies just two hours south of Paris) Châteauroux is a peaceful and lovely town. Historic town combining old and new
The town itself is built around its oldest quarter, which is found near to the river. The newer part fans out around this nucleus, with a suburban sector on the right bank. Even in the newer part of town however, you are never far from a sense of the important history and heritage of Châteauroux. In one of the main squares stands a statue of General Henri Bertrand and the Hôtel de Ville houses both a library and a museum containing some interesting Napoleonic artefacts. Principal buildings in Châteauroux include the modern though Gothic-styled church of St. Andre, and the Château Raoul itself, built in the 14th and 15th centuries, and from which the town derives its name.
