Anyone for champagne?
The Champagne-Ardenne region is in the north-east of France. Not surprisingly, production of champagne is a big industry in the region. There are very strict rules before you can put the name on the label, however. It must be bubbly, grown in designated areas and then aged and bottled according to rigorous standards. If you fancy a bit of tasting yourself, then head straight to Epernay, the de facto capital of champagne production. The other notable feature of the region is the cathedral in the city of Reims. This is, arguably, one of the most beautiful and historically significant buildings in the country. Before the revolution, all French Kings were crowned here.
|
A varied landscape but familiar weather
Its landscape is quite varied and ranges from forests to gorges and fast flowing rivers. You will also find one of the biggest artificial lakes in Europe here: the Lac du Der-Chantecoq. Agriculture dominates the region's vast plains. As in any northern region of France, the climate somewhat mirrors that of the UK.
|
The price of property and communications
Property is fairly inexpensive in Champagne-Ardenne. However, the closer you get to Brussels in the north (the department of Ardennes borders Belgium) and Paris in the west, the higher prices get. Road networks are very good.

ARDENNES PROPERTY GUIDE
MAP
The Ardennes roughly translates as 'deep forest'. The department is ideal for those with a love of the outdoors as it is one of the least populated and unspoilt areas of the country. The rules about renovating properties are also not as strict here as elsewhere in France. This, combined with affordable property prices, makes this an increasingly popular area with international buyers.
AUBE PROPERTY GUIDE
