L'Absie is a pretty little town, and well served by a variety of shops, bars, 3 restaurants, bank, post office, schools, medical facilities, an impressive array of sports clubs and facilities, Intermarché supermarket (with petrol, open on sundays), etc.

If you need something larger than a standard SuperU or Lidl (whch you will find in Moncoutant 10mins, Secondigny 10mins and La Chataigneraie 15mins), the nearest medium sized market towns with a wider variety of supermarkets, weekly markets, rail links, 6th form colleges, and other amenities are Bressuire 30mins, Medieval Parthenay 30mins, Fontenay le Comte 30mins. The nearest city is Niort 40mins, with its historical centre, lovely shopping areas and even wider range of amenities expected of a small city: Classed amongst the top 20 best places to live in france, in an annual survey carried out by newspaper Les Echos.

L’Absie is in the geographical region known as the bocage, characterised by small fields, ancient protected hedges, streams, ponds, pollarded oaks and rolling green hills. This environment is an excellent habitat for birds, insects and small mammals, nature lovers will find plenty to enjoy.

For travel links, L’Absie is 3 drive hours from St Malo, 6 hours from Calais. There are 3 airports within 1.5 hours drive (not to be sniffed at, as the low cost airlines change their routes regularly, so you don’t want to be relying on only one airport). Poitiers has a TGV station with links to Paris and the south. During the summer a tourist train travels from the coast through Bressuire to the Loire chateaux.

The closest coastal resorts are around 1 hour 20, good for day-trips to the beach, La Rochelle and the Isle de Ré have the same driving time. The Vendee enjoys the same sunshine hours as the mediteranean coast, without the stifling heat. The Deux Sevres benefits from the gulf stream effect, and has a relatively dry warm climate. 

Chantemerle (6km from L’Absie) has a cycle/walking path (La Voie Verte) linking the village with Bressuire and Parthenay, using old rail lines. There are forests open to the public in L’Absie and Chantemerle. Europes largest fishing complex Pescalis is 10km away in Moncoutant, with fresh water aquariums, restaurants, walking and (of course) fishing. Chantemerle has a carting track and forest treetop adventure park.  There is an open air pool in La Chataigneraie.

Twice voted the worlds best theme park (and I agree) : Puy du Fou is 50 mins away. Futuroscope is 1h15. Venise Verte 40mins. Loire wine houses offering tours in Saumur 1.5 hours, or in the Layon valley 1h. Vouvant 25mins with its medieval stone buildings and Mervent 30mins with its valley setting, beach and water based activities.  Don’t get me started on Franco-Roman churches (as I don’t know about them, but there are lots), Mouton-village (yes sheep village) in Vasles 45mins, golf courses at Mazieres 30mins, Vasles 45mins and opening soon in Bressuire 30mins. Maulevrier 45mins has a japanese themed garden, the chateau restaurant has a recently renovated ‘potager' garden to rival Versailles (they share gardeners), and the restaurant itself (chateau Colbert) is stunning.
